    License Plate Light

Anyone ever have one light go out? That is my problem. One works (passenger side) but the other does not (driver side). I'm not sure how I would even test to see what the problem is. 2001 Ford Ranger 4x4 XLT

    Lower Ball Joint

I replaced the lower ball joints in my truck yesterday. Thanks to swshawaii for a link to a good how-to and cayman for his how-to! It took me about 5 hours, including a run to Advance Auto for a pickle fork. Yes, you do need a pickle fork! Some advice Put the grease fitting in when you get...

    Lower Ball Joint Trick

I read in a post here about a trick to get the new ball joint in by using a jack. Can someone tell me what the trick is?

    Clunking Noise Front End

There is a clunking noise from the front of my truck. I thought it might be CV joints but it is not specific to turning. My mechanic suggested that it might be the front drive shaft. I started to wonder if it might be in the suspension e.g. ball joints. Any ideas?

    Wagner Rotors Hecho en Chin

I ordered Wagner rotors for my Ranger. Imagine my surprise and disappointment when I looked at the label on the box and saw 'Made in China'. I assumed Wagner would be made in the USA. I wonder if Raybestos rotors are made in China?

    Bleeding ABS Brakes

I was going to do a brake job on my 2001 Ranger (4WD). I had planned on changing the rotors because I believe these are the original rotors (152,000 miles). While reading the forums, I noticed Richard L. said the bleeder valve should be opened so old dirty brake fluid doesn't get pushed into the...

    Ball Joint Noise

2001 Ford Ranger 4 Liter 4 wheel drive Started hearing a noise when I turn wheels to the left only. Definitely metallic noise, almost like popping. Also, just noticed that the same noise happened when I got out of the truck. Could this be ball joints? It doesn't clunk like I imagine CV joints...

    Manually Adjust Rear Drums or...

Discovered that the self-adjusting cable on one of the drum brakes broke. Was wondering if it is worth while to replace the cable (on both sides of course, even though only one is broken) or just manually adjust them. Two things are keeping me from doing it manually. One, having to adjust them...

    Metal Rubbing Noise from Wheel

For the last month or so I heard an intermittent metal grinding noise. Because it was intermittent I couldn't figure out from where it was coming. At first I thought it was the front brakes. I replaced the pads about 2 years ago and thought maybe the pads were worn. Then I thought it might be...

    Universal Joint

How difficult is it to replace universal joints? I've been hearing a "tink" every once in a while when I put the transmission in gear (automatic). I'd like to do it myself, if possible. BTW, I have a 2001 Ford Ranger, not a Sport Trac. Most of the Ranger forums seem to be inhabited by younger...

    Seafoam

A few weeks ago I used the Seafoam project on my 2001 Ranger (4.0). I have tracked the gas mileage for this vehicle for over a year. Since the Seafoam, the MPG has increased about 1 MPG. I don't think they've switched from Winter fuel yet, so I assume it is the Seafoam.

    Jacking

I was reading Family Handyman an article about jacking vehicles. They wrote that with 4 wheel drive vehicles, to lift under the differentials. This seems dicey to me. Any thoughts?

    Transfer Case Fill Plug

Anyone ever not been able to get the plug out? I am having a bear of a time with the one on my Ranger. I'm afraid that if I put too much torque on it, the transfer case will strip.

    PCV Tube Oil Leak

Anyone ever have an oil leak out of the PCV valve where it connects to the valve cover? I've been having an oil leak ( I can tell by the smell:wacko:) that I think is coming from the valve. It has been cold so I haven't been able to work on it. I have used an inspection mirror to look at it. It...

    Replaced Brake Pads

I changed the brake pads in our 2001 Ford Ranger. Very similar to the set up on the Sport Trac, judging by photos in brake project. This was the first time I've done it, ever! The grease on the slide pins was very sticky, not like grease at all. The pins were cupped at the end and there was...

    Brake Question

Are the areas I've circled the anchor plate pins? If not where are they? Where else do you have to apply grease? [Broken External Image]:

    Valve Covers

Has anyone ever replaced the valve cover gaskets on a Sport Trac or Ranger? I thought the truck had a rear main seal leak but now I think it is a valve cover. I looked and there is definitely oil around the driver side one, at the rear. I'm fairly mechanical but this looks like it might be a...

    B F Goodrich Long Trail

I've seen that a lot of people recommend these tires. Consumer Reports has them at the bottom of their rating - poor to fair in *dry braking *wet braking *ice braking and *ride. They are rated very good at hydroplaning (I guess they mean not hydroplaning) and snow traction. My wife's Jeep needs...

    Rear Defroster

We have an 03 Jeep Liberty. One of the wires that attach to the rear grid of the defroster broke off. It appears that the clip was soldered to the window grid. It is too cold, I think, to attempt to solder it back (it has been in the single digits the last couple of days). Anyone know of a good...

    Musings on Coolant Flush

I flushed the coolant in my 01 Ranger 4.0L last week. Evidently the previous owner of this truck never changed the hoses so the factory hoses & clamps were still on it. I am convinced that part of the training for new factory workers at Ford is proper placement of hose clamps. With the...
