I changed the brake pads in our 2001 Ford Ranger. Very similar to the set up on the Sport Trac, judging by photos in brake project. This was the first time I've done it, ever! The grease on the slide pins was very sticky, not like grease at all. The pins were cupped at the end and there was white grease in them. I wonder if the last time they were changed the person used white lithium grease and if that is a good grease to use in this application. I used Permatex brake grease that I bought in packets at the parts store.

The passenger side pad that was making noise had worn down to the warning tab. Thanks to my wife for hearing it! As others have written the pad on the inside was worn down but the outside one still had about 50% remaining. I wonder if it was because of the grease used on the pins. Pins on left and right sides had the sticky grease.

Over all not that difficult to do.
