Discovered that the self-adjusting cable on one of the drum brakes broke. Was wondering if it is worth while to replace the cable (on both sides of course, even though only one is broken) or just manually adjust them. Two things are keeping me from doing it manually. One, having to adjust them who knows how many time a year could be a pain. Second, I thought I read that you have to 'balance' the sides. By 'balance' I think the writer meant adjust both sides equally. I don't know if that is the case or not.

Seems like after the cables are replaced it would be something I wouldn't have to worry about.

Replace both cables. They are cheap. Chances are they have both stretched some. I have always replaced both when needed. Cheap insurance.

You can always manualy adjust. But running only one cable will cause problems.

Be sure and clean the threads on the star wheel adjuster. And never sieze the threads.
