    Great Cross Country Adventure

I'm back. Mickey, that's great that you could take that trip with your grandson. Thanks for all the good tips guys. Total drive 6,445 miles. The trac performed perfectly. Travel is serious business running across parts of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. The same if you use 40 through Oklahoma...

    Engine Cutting Off

Thanks BamaCraig. Good deal. I will try cleaning it. I have noticed that it sometimes stutters while sitting at a light. Doesnt die but rpms drop badly for a few seconds.

    Cruise Control Switch Broken Off

Didn't want to spend to replace a switch that was still working. Didn't want to remove the air bag. These cruise switches have plastic tabs that break off and leave them hanging by the harness. A little L bracket, a small screw, and some epoxy made it nice and tight. A very small amount of...

    Hose from rear axle

Must be a common wear problem. I found the same vent hose broken on my 2002 about 7,000 miles ago.

    Engine Cutting Off

Thanks for the input guys. I will certainly keep these in mind if it gets worse. At this point I can only wait and see. If it is any of these mentioned it will surely get worse in the near future. What ever it is its weird that it is so far spaced apart.

    Engine Cutting Off

Within the past 18 months my 2002 has cut off three times. The first time I was turning into a parking lot. The second time (about nine months later) I was just cruising along at about 45 mph. Then I drove from Arizona to east coast with regular trips out there then back to Arizona totaling...

    Drove 6,545 miles

About 20 MPG is what I get average, but crossing the vast flats of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas I was getting over 25 MPG. I used cruise all of the time. Speed limits of 80 and very little traffic. I cruised at about 70. Other places just stayed at the speed limit in no hurry.

    Funky Fuel Guage

I noticed my 2002 would stay on full to long, then when it should show about 1/2 tank it began to drop. Sometimes it would drop to slowly then read about 1/8 tank all of a sudden. This has now been going on for over a year, but never giving a false reading when nearing empty. I now ignore it and...

    Drove 6,545 miles

I'm back from my trip across country and back. Drove 6,545 miles with no problem whatsoever with the sport trac. $1,152 for gas. Thanks to all for all the maintenance preparation tips. Now have 118,000 miles on it.

    big time problems.

Richard is right, mileage is definitely not a gauge for checking brake wear. Doug you didn't specify 2wd or 4wd. If its 2wd you will find it easy and quick to pop wheel off and take a look at everything in there.

Check Engine preluded by rough idle

At 111,000 miles with never a serious problem I had something like that happen to me but somewhat worse. It started missing bad and the check engine light started flashing so I had it towed instead of driving to the shop. When it would cut out I could restart it but with check engine light...

    4.0l Timing Chain Rattle

This may not be your problem but worth mentioning. I have a 2002 2wd. I remember when it was new I immediately noticed a whine when accelerating. I called it a quite jet engine sound. Upon researching it I found it was a common problem with my model and Ford had a fix for it. They said the...

    Great Cross Country Adventure

Thanks to all for the comments. The oil change goes without saying, will start out with fresh synthetic. I may look at shocks when I return, but mainly taking care of things that can leave me stranded on the side of the road. To anyone who has traveled across country you know how desolate some...

    Great Cross Country Adventure

Almost ready for my cross country round trip from Arizona to Washington DC area and back. Including driving around Maryland and Northern Virginia total mileage should be about 5500 miles. I now have 112,000 on my 2002 2 WD. In preparing I have replaced coolant, upper and lower hoses, front...

Just speaking from past experience on other items Eddie, and of course I will be very happy to have better luck this time.

    mushy breaking

May not be your case here unless you have high mileage. Brake fluid can get old and eventually cause brake pedal fade in a high mileage vehicle. I had the problem on another vehicle and pumped no air when I tried bleeding so I opened the bleeders pumped it all out, added new fluid and did...
