Dave S,

All I can say is: There but for the grace of God go I.

Many people have made tragic mistakes in their lives, and their poor judgement has caused others much pain. Laura Bush caused the death of a teenage friend in a car accident as a teenager. Does she get the same ridicule? Should she? Of course not.

I know I've done things in my life I wish I could take back. I know that there have been instants in my life where I acted before I thought, and the results are such that I am ashamed. I think EVERYONE has such failings; everyone. We seem to want to hold those in the public spotlight to higher standards. I agree the bar should be high for those in public office. Still, I have to think that a lifetime of work should count for something and not be totally discounted because of one unintentional action.

When I think about my failures, and how I can do better, I think of this song by Blue County:

Walk On Water

Everybody covets everybody lies

Everybodys done it some time in their lives

We all slip, we dont mean to

That dont mean you cant make it right

Its the path you take the steps you make

That make you who you are

Its the life you live

The gifts you give

The love thats in your heart

Just try to do the best you can to be a better man

You dont have to walk on water

Its how you walk on land

Everybody judges everybody else

Everybodys done it to everyone but themselves

We know whats right

But we still go wrong

And life still goes on

Even when we fail

Its the path you take the steps you make

That make you who you are

Its the life you live

The gifts you give

The love thats in your heart

Just try to do the best you can to be a better man

You dont have to walk on water

Its how you walk on land

Its the path you take the steps you make

That make you who you are

Its the life you live

The gifts you give

The love thats in your heart

Just try to do the best you can to be a better man

You dont have to walk on water

Oh its how you walk on land

You dont have to walk on water

Its how you walk on land

Thanks for your intelligent reply TJR (as usual).

"We seem to want to hold those in the public spotlight to higher standards"

Yes, when making a living off of the "public", one should be held to a higher standard IMO. Way too many times the "public" has been hoodwinked by those that have presented themselves as having a "higher standard". It "seems" to me anyway!!!

REM has been known to make some good music also:

When the day is long and the night, the night is yours alone,

When you're sure you've had enough of this life, well hang on

Don't let yourself go, 'cause everybody cries and everybody hurts sometimes

Sometimes everything is wrong. Now it's time to sing along

When your day is night alone, (hold on, hold on)

If you feel like letting go, (hold on)

When you think you've had too much of this life, well hang on

'Cause everybody hurts. Take comfort in your friends

Everybody hurts. Don't throw your hand. Oh, no. Don't throw your hand

If you feel like you're alone, no, no, no, you are not alone

If you're on your own in this life, the days and nights are long,

When you think you've had too much of this life to hang on

Well, everybody hurts sometimes,

Everybody cries. And everybody hurts sometimes

And everybody hurts sometimes. So, hold on, hold on

Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on

Everybody hurts. You are not alone.

---------------------------------------------

Hold on TK...Hold on!!!

Look in the mirror and tell me

Just what you see

What have the years of your life

Taught you to be

Innocence dyin' in so many ways

Things that you dream of are lost

Lost in the haze

(Chorus)

Hold on, Baby Hold on

'Cause it's closer than you think

And you're standing on the brink

Hold on, Baby Hold on

'Cause there's something on the way

Your tomorrow's not the same as today

Don't you recall what you felt

When you weren't alone

Someone who stood by your side

A face you have known

Where do you run when it's too much to bear

Who do you turn to in need

When nobody's there

(Chorus)

Outside your door He is waiting

Waiting for you

Sooner or later you know

He's got to get through

No hesitation and no holding back

Let it all go and you'll know

You're on the right track

(Chorus)

Bill V, I Have plenty to to say about the whole kennedy reign. All truth. I feel you are so full of hate from your threads, you cant handle the truth. I watch others get attacked for speaking truth.

The Bible tells me not to spill my pearls before swine. That is why you see me post very little on these issues, that Iam knowledgeable about.. They always turn into hatefful attitudes.

I speak all this with out malice or hate toward you. I only know what you post..

If you were my nieghbors we might be freinds...who knows..:D

I feel you are so full of hate from your threads, you cant handle the truth.

Once again, Fast Eddie, you have no idea about what you're talking about. There's no hate. I can handle the truth just fine--but "the truth" and what many people here are trying to proclaim to be "the truth" are vastly different things. But more importantly, regardless of what is or isn't "truth" or "opinion", I know that the dead deserve a certain level of respect, especially immediately after their passing. Even most warring countries understand that, and allow their opponents to gather and grieve for their dead after battle. That doesn't mean that what one perceives to be the faults of the deceased can't be pointed out, as part of remembering the person. But it does mean that it needs to be done in a respectful manner. Statements made by many Republican legislators demonstrate this well. But statements here like, "I hope the devil handed Mary Jo the pitchfork so that she could stab him first" grossly cross that line.

Regarding Chappaquiddick (sp?)--No one is arguing that that wasn't an extremely major f@#$ up on Kennedy's part. No one is arguing that he shouldn't have faced far more serious punishment as a result. But that one major mistake in no way means that everything he did in his life before or after that had zero good to it. There have been a number of references in this thread to God and the Bible. Well, the Bible is full of examples of people who committed agregious acts, but reformed their ways. Saint Paul is a good example. By the standards being espoused by many people on this thread, Paul should never have been made a saint--in fact, he should be a pariah to all Christianity for his acts against the Church prior to his conversion, as by that standard, all his subsequent good deeds are negated by those previous acts. But obviously that's not what happened.

Further, in Paul's case, the acts he committed against Christians were multiple, willfully malicious, and over an extended time. In Kennedy's case, Chappaquiddick, as horrible an act as it was, was a single, unintentional act. It showed horrendous judgement, but it was not willful.

And before any of you get your undies wadded up--no, I'm not at all trying to compare Kennedy to Saint Paul. I'm simply trying to point out that recognizing and acknowledging someone's positive acts, despite their flaws, is something that is not only OK for Christians to do, but something they are encouraged to do.

TJR said it well in his post:

So, yes, Teddy made some mistakes...a tragic mistake in one case. Yes, he leaned pretty far left. But if there isn't something that you can admire in his life of 77 years than I feel sorry for you...truly sorry.

Not always true, but in this case I agree...

Saw this on another web site yesterday:

The whole world suffered a terrible loss yesterday with the passing from cancer of a great American icon who overcame unspeakable family tragedies and his own alcoholism to become a legendary advocate for justice. Born to privilege in a large and wealthy Irish Catholic family, he attended elite prep schools, served in the military, and after a family members murder devoted the rest of his life to social causes and fighting injustice wherever he found it. This larger-than-life characters quick wit and compelling speaking style made him a friend to all who knew him - even those of different political beliefs-and helped advance the many causes he believed in so passionately.

May you rest in peace, Dominick Dunne.

OTHER DEATHS YESTERDAY: Ted Kennedy

Some of the posts on this thread are without class. The man served 40 years in government. Sure he had some personal problems, but who doesn't?? Didnt really hinder his ability to be a really good public servant. Shame on the haters. I suspect that you who spewed negatively about the man, have your own personal axe to grind. You are not thinking about whats best for this country.

Frank, what is best for this country? Socialism- government owning our largest businesses and the president hiring and firing CEOs?

Enabling people who don't want to work to just stay at home and make babies, all at the expense of the taxpayers?

Forcing anyone who works hard and smart to give up their money so the government can give it to someone lazy or who doesn't want to make good choices?

I think you are the hater here. You hate the United States of America and all the people who work hard and gave the ultimate sacrifice to make our country as good as it once was.

Poor Gavin's a sour puss today. Nothing but negative. Cheer up. Smile. Careful or you'll start yelling things like, "Hey you kids! Get off my lawn!"

Hey Gavin. Is that what you think Ted Kennedy wanted? You are borderline psycho. I really have to call you out. You sound like Glen Beck and the radical wing nut jobs that wanna level guns at politicians. Chill out. Get in touch with reality.

Im serious!

Frank,

And I'm calling you out. Glenn Beck is actually quite unbiased. He simply wants a govt that does the right thing for its people. Guys like Sean and Rush can't see past their party, and their bias at times, but if you can't see that Glenn isn't cut from the same cloth as those two other guys than it's you that have lost the ability to be objective.

TJR>>

Dude?? Glenn Beck is a lunatic. Calling the President a racist does not seem to me like something that someone who wants the best for the country would do.

He has cried on national television for Pete's sake. Like a teenage girl. All, might I add, for ratings. It is a complete joke! I cant believe you think he is the answer. The WWF is more believable than that freak. He may get ratings, but thats just because people wanna see what he will say next. Like Howard Stern. Do you think that a game of lesbian anal ring-toss is good for the country then?? Wake up. I am astonished. Beck is no different than Limbaugh and Hannity. 3 pushers trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the weak. OH MY!

Frank,

So the man cried on national TV. So what.

What Beck was saying (in a non-PC, and not so intelligent fashion) is that Obama has made some less than ideal choices for filling his cabinet; some very controversial choices. Glenn was trying to point out that Obama just might be giving jobs like that to people of color, because they are people of color, and not because they are the most qualified. If that is true, call it wanting to be around "Birds of a Feather", or call it racism, but he makes a good point nonetheless.

Another example is the new Supreme Court Justice Sodomyor (sp?). Is she really the most qualified justice...man or woman? I suspect not. She smacks of an olive branch to the latino community.

Too bad we'll never undo the 47 years worth of damage done to the country by Teddy.

He was very good at helping the poor and underprivileged to other peoples' money.
