awhile back my trac puked its engine ,, I am getting ready to go look at a engine at a junk yard and the place is reputable I have done business with them before although I need to cover all my bases . I have planned to go look and listen to said engine I also have a plan to replace gaskets water pump thermostat front and rear main seal and the timing set spark plugs and wires prior to replacement

any other suggestions on this issue will help

I would look for a newer 4.0 like 2005 and up, with less miles, and just swap over your intake and such to it. It should have the better timing chain components already within, so then just check normal maintenance items like spark plugs, plug wires, oil filter, oil, etc

While the engine is out, might also be a good time to drain your transmission fluid, including from the torque converter, and put fresh fluid in the converter and transmission, with a new filter
