This is the way I understand it:



Idle: standing still. not doing anything. An idle engine is "turned off", not running.



Idle speed: engine is turned on but not making the vehicle "go anywhere".



So, if your engine is running and the vehicle is standing still and you turn on the air conditioner, the compressor etc will come on. When that happens, it presents a "load" on the engine and the engine responds, via the IAC, to increase the "idle speed" to compensate for the load.



If you press the go pedal, other components take charge and the IAC is then "idle".
