My gorgeous Black Sport Trac has been passed down to my oldest son for all intents and purposes...and now there is magically a HUGE scuff/scratch on the front left bumper!! What did he hit? -Nothing, according to him. I don't want to get too upset, because $#!% happens but I just wanted to cry...or choke him...or both.

:angry::cry::fire:

yea, I feel for you. When my daughter got her license, I bought her a very well used Honda Prelude, decent mechanical condition but a little rough in the appearance department for her first car. I figured she would beat the fenders & bumpers up real bad, NEVER put a scratch on it in 3 yrs. Wife got a new car, gave the daughter the wife's 94 Accord in close to show room condition, withing 3 weeks she had punched a hole in the front bumper the size of a softball, broken both tail lights and a bent rim. Also needed a radiator support bracket related to the hole in the bumper. Grin and bear it, love hurts.:driving:

This is why you never buy a young driver a new car, I don't care how responsible they are. Wouldn't be too upset over the scratch, but I would punish him for lying about it.

Les,

My parents bought us (3 kids) a '91 Honda Civic hatchback for $7,000 after all three of us had our licenses.

We all were involved in different extra-curricular activities and the driving around was getting to be too much for them. My sister rear-ended someone and almost wrote the damn thing off. It was never the same after that. Even when I went away to university out of the city, the car stayed in their driveway, after all it was STILL theirs.

PERSONALLY SPEAKING, my first vehicle was a '91 Ranger 2.3L Manual Trans. I paid $1500 for that little devil. On that Truck I learned the importance of regular maintenance and (since it was only a 2.3L 4 banger) it kept me out of trouble with the LEOs - it wasn't gonna go above 100 kph if I even wanted to).

That prepared me enough to respect the ST for the upscale vehicle that it is (upscale in comparison to my last two vehicles).

Long story short, if you're going to buy/give your kids a vehicle, give them one that wont matter if it gets dinged/smashed up. Because whether you believe they are a good driver or not, they are still inexperienced and will probably neglect even the most basic maintenance.

AND WHAT THE "EFF" IS WITH THE POP MUSIC KIDS ARE LISTENING TO THESE DAYS?!?!?!

My oldest, now 22, has had more accidents than HE cares to remember... His first car was an 88 Toyota Corolla DX18? I think... On his 6th day as a licensed driver, he drove to school, pulled out in front of a chevy pickup, and got creamed.. spun him arouund and his car then hit the back side of that guys truck. He then proceeded to drive on to school, then back home, and park it in the driveway. Never said a word.

At the time, Sue worked the evening shift as a CNA and got off at 11:00 PM. I went to move his car for his mom to park in the garage and found the damage. Sue and I went and woke him up asking him what happened to his car... His response: "Why, isnt it in the driveway?"

Holy cow were we mad... To top it all off, he didnt have his proof of insurance with him, and only exchanged information with the guy. I had to meet the man the next morning at 5:00 AM to provid him the insurance info... He did over $3500 damage to that truck... I patched the toyota back together and 3 months later he hit a road sign and it was a gonner.

My second child, daughter, is now 20, and never had an accident.

Our third, Michael, has his permit now. I got a good deal on a 2001 Escort and that will be his car.

OMG! I can't stop laughing from all the memories. I'll only bother with one.

With the combining of his/her/and ours 3 of us went for our drivers license on the same day. (Had to have a B average in school) It was back in the day when a permit driver could have any licensed driver in the car so of course another 16 year old was our licensed driver.

Brother was driving and we decide that we needed food before the test so Burger King drive through it was. Todd was showing off and was going too fast for the drive through turns and curbs. Ended up hopping the curb and running into the Drive-Thru sign you order through.

Level headed cop showed up and just made us provide insurance info and we were on our way. Never even entered our mind to call our Dad before continuing on to the DMV.:driving:

Karma or lack of experience; either way we all failed our test that day. You try parallel parking a suburban when you're 16.

I don't have kids but spend enough time with the nieces and nephews and had a friends 14 year old living with me for almost a year. I now understand why my parents were always in a bad mood.

i have a story to share. my daughter just fresh out of high school in 07. we went to metro nissen and she wanted a real new used maxima. it was and 07 08 they wanted like about 23,000 for it and i said that to much amount and payment for someone right out of high school.she didnt like it and i just said tough, and i said she should get a vehicle that is used to get her experience in then in about 5 or 6 or 7 years then she can get the car she really wants. and she didnt like that idea. so she said fine then i'll get someone else to cosign for me and i told her good luck. well my son and i went to the metro nissen dealer and they had a 01 ford mustand with 15,000 miles for only 13,000 so he bought it he also had a 01 S-10 to pay on. so i told him why dont you let your sister take over payments on the S-10 and you'll only have 1 vehicle payment. so i ran it by my daughter and at first she didnt want it and i told her you cant pass it up its a good deal she didnt have to put any money down just take over payments at 210 amonth. so here its now 2010 and she just paid the truck off this spring. and she still driving it and is in no hurry to get another car. she damaged the tailgate when she hit a dip in the road. it flew off and hit the pavement and a big truck ran over it and caved the tailgate in.. and then she was driving in the rain in the dark and she took a crave to fast and hit the curb and bent her driver side front rim she call me and we had to fine her she didnt know where she was at. she was by the ontario airport and i describe some thing to her and as we were driving i seen flashing red light about a mile away from where we were at and we found her. so my son had to take her front wheel off his truck and put it on her truck to get it home then we found on ebay stock rims for the truck for a 100 dollars and my son went and got them the next day and put them on. so young drivers dont need to get new cars they should start out in used one like about 7,8 10yrs old to get there experience in. and then when they are old enuff they can get the car on there own. so that way if the wreck it, its there car and there debt. not on your credit.. sorry for the long story.
