It seems that most SportTrac owners on this forum who trade their Tracs trade up the F-150. It also seems that many SportTrac owners traded in Ranger pickups for their Tracs.

I wonder what this means? Rangers are too small, but the Trac doesn't quite cut it, so they trade for an F-150?

Wonder what F-150 owners trade for?

hmmm....

As I just posted in another thread, I did the same as JB 2 1/2 weeks ago. I think with the recent family pricing a lot of people are upgrading to F150s. I darn near bought a new one myself, but opted for something a little sportier and easier to park.

Plus, the STs really look unique, imho. EVERYONE has an F150 these days.

I didn't realize that there were that many others here who traded in Rangers for STs. I did it because we needed a 4-door vehicle, but still needed a pickup from time to time. When the ST came out in 2000, it seemed like the perfect fit -- and it was!

"Wonder what F-150 owners trade for?"

lol. I traded my 2003 F150 Supercrew with a 5.4L for a Toyota Corolla. I am saving a fortune. Wife still has the ST for hauling trash, the camper, etc. Doesn't do as well as the F150, but we get by.

I traded my ST for a Toyota Matrix over 2 years ago. Miss the utility of the ST, but gladly traded 15.5 mpg for 38.7 mpg :)

I used to drive a 95 Ranger XLT (used), reg-cab/short bed, 2WD, 3.2L(?), cloth seats, AM/FM cassette, and no power anything! By the time it got around 130,000 reliable miles, I was already way overdue for an upgrade. Enter the Sport Trac. I've always liked 4-door light pick-ups for their relatively compact size yet still able haul both people and cargo. And have always had my eye on the ST since it came out. Last year I got real serious about buying a new 04 and after some research, an X-plan PIN (thanks to a 'sponsor' here), and a co-signer for 0% APR, I finally took one home! The ST is a heck of an upgrade from the 95 Ranger. I still get dreamy about being able to recline my leather seat all the way back listening to CDs, while looking out through the moonroof! Shoot, a year later and I still can't believe I have one and I find myself staring at it too frequently.

I like the new F150 a lot and I've contemplated on upgrading to one. But my ST has plenty of miles left in her and I'm planning on holding on to her for as long as I can...well past the 100,000 mile mark. By the time I'll be seriously thinking of an upgrade, who knows what'll be available? All I know is it will still be a Ford.

I had two Ranger 4x4 4-door Supercabs before, loved 'em, but my kids are getting bigger and didn't fit in the back very well any more. With the bed extender I can get by.

Trac and Ranger owners often trade up to F-150's because they're bigger and the gas mileage isn't any worse.

F-150 owners trade up to Powerstrokes.

If gas stays where it is, I'm getting a 4-banger Ranger next time and I'll just deal with winter as best I can.

I went from an '86 Mustang GT, to a '96 Ranger Supercab, to a '99 Ranger Supercab, to a '02 Sport Trac, and now currently to a '04 Sport Trac Adrenalin. Traded the Mustang on my first Ranger because I had just recently purchased a house, and needed a truck for the numerous "Honey-Do" projects that came with being a first-time home owner. I then traded up to the '99 Ranger because I liked then then new four-door Supercab. Next came an addition to our family, my son. That prompted a trade to the '02 ST, because his car seat wouldn't fit in the back of the Ranger. Finally traded for the '04 ST Adrenalin simply because I liked the look of the Adrenalin package, and I got a really good deal between the X-plan and trade-in.

When it's time to get rid of this ST, I'll probably trade up to a F-150 or a SuperDuty. Not sure which, that'll be determined by what kind of travel trailer we decide to upgrade to from our current hybrid.

I do wish now that I would've just bought that first Ranger outright and kept the Mustang. Man, that was a fun car to drive and tinker with. Oh well, you know what they say about hindsight!

IMO, the Trac is a "crossover vehicle". Not as saying that it is a truck/SUV, but more so a vehicle that is for someone that feels they need a truck, but still needs 4 doors. Once they have a Trac, they start using it for more things then they ever thought possible. Boats, campers, off-roading, etc. once they like having a truck and the toys get bigger, they just upgrade to an F-150.

The car I had before the Trac was a 1992 Escort GT. Drove it for over 130,000 miles and never spent one dime in repairs besides regular maintenance like Waterpump (Had it done because I was due for a timing belt), drive belts, hoses, brakes, etc. (If you knew the way i drove it, you would understand how good of a car that Escort GT was...Hint: I had to buy two tires a year because I like smoke coming out of the wheel wells. when the fronts went bald, I put those tires on the back and get two new ones for the front so I could drive in the winter, the following summer I did the same thing)

In 2001 Theresa got a house and we felt we needed a truck. Was going to buy a crap Ranger or F-150 to have when needed. I felt after (ab)using my Escort for 10 years and not having a payment for 8 years, I decided to buy something new.

That is why I got my Trac. Fortunatly, I am keeping my toys small enough that the Trac does fine for the (ab)use I give it. I don't have a boat, but I do plan on getting a camper.

Fortunatly for me, the ones I like are small. I rented a pop-up last winter to go to FloridaI liked being able to tow it at 75 to 85 MPH and zipping around in traffic...something I could not have done with a full size trailer.

Looking back, I do not understand how I "survived" without a truck-like vehicle. It seems like almost every day i used the bed for something I never imagined I would use it for. Whether it be a load of dirt, firewood, plywood, mulch, or any other crap I put in the bed. For me the Trac is perfect.

I just think those that trade up to an F-150 did not realize how much they needed a truck in the first place and the Trac was able to help them realize it.

I test drove an F-150. It was really nice, but just too darn big for what I need it for.

With my Trac, I get good gas mileage, I have great power, it handles nice, and people that ride in it are impressed with it. Still after three years, dings & scratches and normal wear and tear, I just look at my Trac and I am still in love with it. It looks sporty and agressive. It doesn't look like a truck. IMO, the Trac looks better then any other Crew Cab truck out there...including the F-150.

Still to this day, I will park it so I can look out the window and see it.

I think you forgot something in that last post, Tom:

Thanks for reminding me...

I like looking in the rear wheels and seeing this...

2002 Trac with 4 wheel disc brakes.

Yeah, that looks really sharp. Great job on that upgrade. Are you going to publish it as a project? I'm sure there are others who are anxious to do it also, and would benefit from your experience.

I need to finish the job like E-Brake cables and stuff. I do plan on making a project on it.

I sold my Ranger to buy my Trac. The ranger was just to damn small. People with a thirst for power get the F150's for the V8. So do people that tow large RV's. We used my wife's Expedition for towing our RV. I would never use the Trac for towing anything other then a pop-up although I have seen people on this site that do.

How about this. I traded a 01 Lightning for my 03 ST 4wd, then the next year in Florida I bought an 04 ST to run around there. I really liked the 04 and it was a 2wd but then I traded it for an 05 Focus wagon so I could pull it behind my motorhome as the 04 would have to be modified to tow. Anyway my 03 4x4 is my snow machine when in Ohio and it is a great vehicle. Got all my Ford's on Z plan.

I must be the oddball:rolleyes:, I got rid of a 01 F-150 SuperCrew for my Trac. Didnt need the size and missed a smaller truck for trail riding after owning many Rangers and a Explorer.
