I've been hearing some people talk about removing the air intake silencer. Will it harm my Trac to remove it? What about in the long run? Also, is there a noticeable difference in sound??

Slightly more of an air sucking sound, but on a stock Trac it is not that noticeable..

NO side effects at all....

It only harmed mine from bending the fender lip with a crowbar trying to pry the airbox out. I never did get it out BTW.

I've had my off since I brought it home. almost 120,000 miles later, no ill effects.

I didn't even notice the sound of air when I did it.

David, I would not do that on the 07.... The silencer/snorkel grabs all the cool air from in front of the radiator and behind the headlight..

I don't understand the problems getting the airbox out....all it took was a bit of pulling. Anger from frustration will kick in after a few seconds, and that'll get it out.

I also had trouble with the fender lip, though it was mainly "operator trouble", in that I didn't realize the smarter direction to pull in to remove the box at first, so I pulled it towards the fender lip, and I got the sorry box out successfully, but my blood lies on that lip. They say that scars are less UV resistant, but no matter what I do, I have a pink blemish on my hand from it.

Of course, _now_ I can get it out with no problems....

(I have an 02, so if it's radically different on another model, then I outspoke myself :)

What is the "smarter direction to pull in"? I've tried a few times to pull the thing out, to no avail. And yeah, getting angry with it is likely to do me and the ST more harm than good, so...

I used a large chisel as a prybar. Went under the box on the maf sensor side. It poped right up...

It comes out really easy with the right tools. :)

I took mine out today. 03 model.

I used a pry bar to move the airbox away from the fender, removed the black christmas tree clip that holds the splash guartd in front of the airbox, then lifted up. It took some wiggling, but it came out. To remove the actual silencer, I twisted it about 10 degrees and then stuck a screwdriver between the inside of the box and the flange on the silencer and popped it into the box. It comes our pertty easy.

I put a K&N in the box, put a bottle of Techron in the tank, put a PureOne filter and 5 quarts of Mobile 1 5W30 in the engine.

Good to go for 6000 or so miles!

I will do a few 0 - 30, 0 - 60, 1/8 mile and 1/4 mile runs with my GPSPerformance tester and report any change from stock.

Next up, reprogramming my XCal II...

Did this today. All-in-all, it took 5 minutes, tops.

Maybe I got lucky, but it was harder for me to get the top off the air box than it was to pop out the 4 grommets, and the intake silencer itself literally just fell out before I'd even gotten the last two grommets loose.

Haven't driven it yet, but I started it up and you can hear the difference a bit even at idle. Nothing major, just sounds like it's breathing a little easier. I'll be interestd to see if I can feel a difference once I take it out for a spin.
