2005 Sport Trac XLT with rear disk brakes. How do you tell if you have phenolic or metal pistons without tearing down the rear brakes?

Sorry, No way to tell but remove them..

Is there an advantage to one over the other? Phenolic pistons would seem offer a longer life to the calipers as they do not rust, BUT, how do they hold up to the heat?

They were phenolic, bought one of each set of pads and took back the ones that were for the metal pistons. The differance is in the size of the clip that fits into the piston, bigger clip for the metal and smaller clip for the phenolic.

That works......

Good deal...
