maybe this should be in another section, 'cause not sure what it is. i bought my '02 trac a few months ago and ever since i've had it, when starting up, there's a noise from the engine compartment that sounds like an engine bearing noise, but it goes away instantly and will not come back if i race the engine, etc. only time it does it is at start up. also, doesn't do it every time i start it. the trac has 150k miles, but uses no oil, leaks no fluids, and holds excellent oil pressure.

any suggestions as to what the noise might be?

thanks, dutch

Sounds like engine start-up noise. As an engine gets older, it takes SLIGHTLY longer for the oil to build pressure.

Theresa's Explorer was doing that over the winter. When the weather warmed up I changed the oil. It doesn't do it now.

Not sure if it is the new oil (I change my oil once a year at about 20,000 miles driven), the warmer weather, or a combination of both.

Her Explorer has 176,000 miles on it.

My 1991 Escort does it for about 4 seconds after it sits for about a week. Of course, that vehicle has over 350,000 miles on it and since the engine will be coming out soon, so I really don't care.

How about the timing chain guides. Might need replacing. Some of the early 4.0L would tend to rattle on startup.

Try an oil filter with a good working anti drain valve.... Out of a case of 12 motorcraft filters I have here about 6 of the valves work correctly...the rest let air go buy...

Big,

I just take a new filter, Place a towel over it, and inhale and exhale into the center hole...

1 way should resist you if it is working..

With the trac filter mounting, hangin straight down. Im under the impression that the anti drain back valve should not matter. The oil will stay in it after shut down. In my experiance a side mounted filter will matter..

Ed, Yes and no....

IT will keep the filter full, BUT the valve keeps the oil in the top of the motor and it does not drain down too....

Sounds good in theory..
