I love what I do. Selling automobiles is a passion of mine. It's no secret that the market is really down right now. I'm not selling much right now. In fact, I'm scared out of my mind. Every month is seems like my numbers drop by about two cars.

I've made all the adjustments I can. I even moved to 0.5 miles away from the dealership so I can now walk to work. I don't have to waste so much money on fuel and we no longer heat our home with fuel oil. Everything is city electric. We save about $400 a month now.

I don't eat out for daily meals. We make everything at home.

I don't want to find a new career. I don't want to go back to college if at all possible.

So I had a thought; what about a home based business? I've been looking into this for about a month now and it seems like there are a ton of scammers out there.

I trust this site and the people on it. I'm wondering of anyone has encountered a great income $30,000yr + doing something online and home based.

I'd prefer not to do sales. I'd like to try something else.

Any thoughts?

$30,000 a year? I have heard there was a market for medical transcription services which are home-based. I don't know anyone that actually does it though, and I don't know what it pays.

I think most people just use the internet as a hobby/information service. Maybe you can develop some online car buying scheme, so you can sell cars from your home, and then cut out the dealership from your sales.

Of course, you could go the easy/sleazy way and start a porn site.

My daughter did medical transcription over the internet for a while. Yes, it is legitimate since hospitals all over the US are opting to use independent medical transcriptionist so they don't have to hire another FTE (full time employee) Some hospitals keep a basic number of transcriptionist to handle their average load and then outsource the work when their transcriptionist get overloaded. Other just outsorce all of it.

Most legitimate companies will give you the software for free but you will need to by a foot controller the allows you to start, stop and replay the dictation files.

Transcriptionist are usually paid a small fee for each report they complete, as well as a per word fee, or a per minute fee depending upon the length of the dictation recording.

My daughter lived way out in the country and actually had to use DirecTV's satelite Internet to get a broadband connection. The quipement cost over $400 at the time. She does not do the transcription anymore, but teaches Medical Technology at a local University, but it allowed her to stay home and work and still take care of the kids when they were small.

My sister does medical transcipts from home, but you have to know all the "slang" that goes with it. In other words, its not something you can just pick up, she actually had to go to school to do it. She makes arounf 50-60k a year depending on the work available.

Not 30K a year but wanna buy Zabteck ?? :D

psycareyo,

Go to night courses @ your local college for Web/graphic design. Given the right connections there is a potential to make upwards of $60,000 or much more per year.

Thats what im doing as soon as i get laid off on Nov. 14th.

running my own business scares the hell out of me though..

My brother does the graphic design thing. He said the field is saturated with people. I went to college for studio art and he went for grahpic design.

Psycareyo,

Home based business, especially non-sales based opportunities that DO NOT require some back-to-school and retraining are very hard to come by. Heck, if I knew of some I would write a book, sell it and retire.

Home based sales, and onlines sales (like through eBay or your own website) can make you money, but I have to tell you that the competition is great and you will have to work long hours to get $30k/year.

Home based "services" also difficult as most services are personal. Yes, you can do services online (like transcriptionist) but again, the competition is then global and the pay therefore very low.

Here are things that I have considered to augment my income, and still consider on a weekly basis (though they aren't exactly what you are thinking about)

- ATM management - work with local businesses to place and stock ATMs in their locations. Rent the machines or buy them at about $3k each. If you get a high traffic area, charge a $2.50 transaction fee and give the merchant $.50 of that, you can make a lot of money. The ATMs today can be run (or at least inspected) from your home, across the internet, to assure they are operating, have enough cash, etc.

- Foreclosure, Pre-Foreclosure Home Purchasing - Camp out a few minutes each day at your local courthouse/county clerks office reviewing NOD (Notice of Default) records. When you find someone who is defaulting on their mortgage and about to go into foreclosure then do you homework, figuring out the amount owed on the home, back taxes, market value of the home, yearly taxes, and what the home can likely rent for per month, then DO THE MATH and see if with little or no money down you could: a. buy the home, b. rent it to the current owner c. put some cash in your pocket or the renter's pocket in the process. If the math works out, knock on the current owner's door and explain the offer, then if they agree, go to the bank and buy the house. You might not make a lot of money a month in this manner...if you break even and take the tax break on the mortgage interest, then it is an investement that pays as the home(s) you have bought grow in value.

My Wife (retired Nurse) do's med trans, pays about 18 bux an hr

For an RN it is a 3 month JC course, non-RN 8 mos, than you have to do an internship.

also your typing skills need to be at least 80 WPM.

Not a fun Job.

My friend in Oregon is a home transcriptionist. She works a normal 8-9 hour shift and is a very fast typist (~ 130 wpm). This is her 5th year of doing transcription. Her gross income for 2007 was just shy of $42K, so there is some money to be made doing it for sure. Her computer is paid for and her commute is 30 seconds. :p

I would think that a motivated person with above average typing skills could start in this field making $12-15/hour.

The only thing about working from home is that you have to be extremely self-disiplined. It could get very easy to become distracted by something else around the house during the "work day".

Any chance you you ck with your friend and tell me how she gets her trans info?

Most are tapes, any info would be apprieciated.

I know a girl who quit her job at TI and now just sells stuff on Ebay. She drives around to garage sales and buys stuff and then takes pix of it and posts it on Ebay.

She claims she makes the same if not more than what she earned working for TI. People buy just about everything on Ebay, more for just the idea of beating someone else out of the bids. Like that dude that paid about 1500. for a friggin corn flake that looked like one of the states.

Med transcription is a well paying wah job either in an office or working at home.

It does require special skills and knowledge but can be well worth all the studying you need to do to be certified. (and the key is certified --state certified people more often gets the better paying jobs)

if you or anoyone else wants to persue this type of career, read up on it first. School is not cheap for it. You can find good home schooling for it and work on the classes in your spare time..

Look into Penn Foster for schooling. That is a very good accredited school. You would have to have training for the MT poistion no way to get around that. Here is the link to Penn Foster for MT. You might want to check into thier Medical Billing and coding classes. That is another field you can do from home. Penn Foster assists with job placement after graduation.

They also offer other courses of study check them out while on their site.

TJR, Just FYI your second step of renting back to the original owner, although it sounds like a great idea, is HIGHLY discouraged in REI circles. Too many legal problems come up if you ever have to evict them. I forget the correct term, but they still feel like they are the owner so they claim deception, misunderstanding, etc. In the end it doesn't hold up, but it costs a lot of $$$ to get to the end game.

Doug Watts,

Thanks for the input. I've been considering that as a possible side-income generator because I have several friends in other states that are doing exactly what I describe and haven't had issues.

How about setting up a auto sales business for MySportTrac members? Get a group buy going for discounted Tracs for members, with maybe a delivery service or vacation packages at the pick up location.
