Hi Everybody in 'Trac land.

the wife and I are thinking about going to Vegas because she wants to check out the hoover dam and the grand canyon. Has anybody gone to Vegas here and know of a good place to stay. We don't want to stay on the strip because we don't gamble.

Y'all have a good one

Bob

Just because you don't gamble does not mean you shouldn't stay on the strip. Visiting the hotels and just walking through is a blast.

In many cases, the hotels on the strip are cheaper than the chain hotels in the area.

While out there, you might want to go to the the Pawn Shop featured on the TV show "Pawn Stars".

I am stepping on a plane to go there in 15 minutes in fact....

The Hard Rock hotel has what they call HRH Suites.

They are REALLY nice rooms and very modern. All glass shower/bathroom, huge tub, two 50-inch TV's that create a separating wall from the bed room to the sitting area, built in juke box in the wall with 1400 songs and you can put your iPod into it as well...

You can goggle it to get a link or, go to their main site and look for the HRH link.

I see they have deals for 109.00 at this time.

And I agree with the others, staying on the strip is pretty neat as you get to see all walks of life as well as millions of lights and sights...

Been there twice. Stayed at the Rio, nice place and Sams Town which is off the strip. Pain in the Arse to get from there to the strip, but a nice hotel. They have a movie theater and a huge bowling alley. We actually won the most at that place too, but the strip is more fun I think.

Bob,

My family and I were just there over Christmas. We stayed three nights just off the strip at the Trump hotel. There's no casino at the Trump, and it's just about a block or two off the main strip. Very nice hotel. For about $20/night more, we were upgraded to a huge two-room suite with a gigantic bathroom, kitchen, and a great view of the strip and outlying area. Here's the link:

We spent the remainder of our trip at the Red Rock Casino/Resort/Spa out in the Red Rock Canyon area off the strip. We enjoyed this resort much more than staying on the strip. It had a casino, restaurants, a Regal Cinema complex, shopping all right there at the resort. It was a little more laid back and not as crowed & busy than the places on the strip. And if you want to go to the strip, Red Rock runs free shuttles to the strip all day. And it's in a beautiful area. We spent one whole day hiking in Red Rock Canyon, and that was our favorite part of the whole trip. Here's their web site:

If you want to see any shows, I highly recommend the Cirque du Soleil "Viva Elvis" at the ARIA CityCenter. We saw a preview show of it and it was fantastic. Lots of great music and dancing showcasing the life of Elvis Presley. Link to the Viva Elvis website:

The LV tourism industry is hurting big time right now, so they're offering tons of great deals on hotel packages. Shop around and wheel and deal with them, and you'll be surprised what you can get right now. Keep us posted on what you decide to do. Have fun!

I love Vegas!

You don't have to gamble to have a good time there, Just bring some good walking shoes.

Been there several times. I like the breakfast at Binions in the old part of Vegas.

Go to the Golden Nugget towntown, check out the huge Gold Nuggett!

The Buffett at Rio is awesome! Just go to the clubs, take lots of pictures.

People watch, have fun and check out some of the shows.

I'd love to go see Terry Fador among others.

I'm in Vegas at least 2x a year, and I always stay at the Riviera. Nice place, good rooms, cheap and great buffet.

If you gamble primarily there and use the points card, you can usually get your room comped.

Make sure to check out the new bridge at Hoover. It's amazing!

Best way to see the town is to stay on the strip, jump on a trolly and take it to the end of the strip (2 bucks each I think) and take the rest of the day walking back while stopping in at all the casinos to see all the touristy things there are to see!

Have fun!

Bob,

Your post has put the bug in my ear to visit Vegas this year. Looks like I could have one week staying at Hooters, including airfare, for around $750.00. This is for 7 days for two people.

Still working out the details. Looking at the end of September to go. I want to say "I experienced 100 degree temperature, but it was a 'DRY HEAT'"

Haven't been to Vegas in years so I cannot make any suggestions about where to go or stay there but if your going to the Grand Canyon I suggest traveling to the North Rim. It will be way cooler this time of the year and a lot less crowded. Also gives you a chance to go through Zion National Park which is so cool because at the Grand Canyon your at the top looking down and at Zion your at the bottom looking up. Both places are incredibly beautiful.

I have been to Vegas many times and stayed at most of the more popular hotels over the years including the MGM Grand, Monte Carlo, Excaliber, Luxor, and the Venitian. I found the best deals off the stip at The Orleans, which is about 1 mile off the strip on Tropicana Blvd.

I always rent a car when I go to Vegas and found that The Orleans alows me to go to any casino or place on the stip without having to fight the traffic on the strip, but just driving a few blocks off the strip where there is very little traffic. That's the real problem I have with the hotels on the strip is having to fight all that strip traffic.

As for the Grand Canyon, you will probably be better off just going to the West Rim section which is about 100 miles from Vegas. The more poplular South Rim is over 260 miles from Vegas but all the roads are paved. Be warned that there is a 21 mile section of unpaved road that takes you to the indian reservation where you can enter to see the West Rim of the Grand Canyon. It's not too bad since tourist buses go down that road and it is kind of scenic. Acutally some people say that the Western Rim is actually the most scenic view.

You can also go to Red Rock Canyon, The Valley of Fire, and the Hover Dam which are all very close to Vegas and worth the cost of a rental car.

Of course, there is entertainment galore in Vegas from stage shows, comedians and top name musicians, etc. So you can have a really good time and never have to gamble.

Thanks Everybody!! We have now planning the trip. The glass skywalk is one of the things that my wife wants to see.

Thanks a bunch!!!

Bob

It is official, we are planning our vacation this year (one of two vacations per year) to Las Vegas. Renting an Ultra Classic Harley-Davidson motorcycle and riding to the sky walk. If we were to ride a buss, the cost would be about the same as the rental, except I get to ride in the desert in an American classic motorcycle with my best girl on the back.

Life does not get any better than that.

With that being said, for less than $1,000, we fly from CAK to LAS and stay at Hooters for 7 days. Add another 1,000 for food and car rental and we will have a hella cool time for little investment.
