Last week my "check gas cap" light came on and it will not go off. I have replaced the gas cap, and the check engine light came on. Has anyone ever experienced this?

Disconnect the NEG cable on the battery and wait 1/2 hour..... This will reset the light..
OR it take some driving cycles before the computer resets...
IF it comes back on, Clean the gasket and the filler neck with a rag and make sure it looks like its getting a good seal.
IF not have it looked at

+1 on what Todd stated. Another thing, assuming you have a Gen 1 ST. You may be experiencing what happened to me.
Check the evap hoses on top of the spare tire area and there is also a vent tube beside the filler neck.
Might have one disconnected/clogged which may be causing the CEL and/or gas light. On my '02 an evap hose on the spare tire area came loose and gave me the gas cap & CEL. Plugged it back in and no problems since. Has been over 2 years.
