Actually, I agree with your co-worker--just so long as he's talking about my son, whose nickname is Chevy (his initials are CHEV), and not the auto-maker... :)

Ford makes a great car. I just purchased a 1991 Escort GT with 354,400 miles on it. Yes, that is 354,000 miles. Original engine and tranny.

On a side note, it failed emissions today. I guess a couple gallons alcohol in the gas, a borrowed converter, and a new fuel filter should fix the problem long enough to get it through the test.

Took it out and was able to hit 120 MPH with the car. Not too shabby for a POS Ford throwaway Escort.

LOL. Downhill and a 150 mile an hour wind at your back. I'd be scared to death to run an Escort over 80.

Yup, an Escort is dangerous, unsafe, and unreliable.

354,000 miles unreliable.

Still has to original alternator and started.

And, your is probably 1 out-of 100 still on the road. Exception to every rule. I can't even remember the last time I've seen an Escort on the road. Probably the area I live in (Microsoft) where every other car is German or Japanese.

I see an average of 10 Escorts a day.

Check this link out...

A quick eBay search shows MANY Escorts with over 100,000 miles.

My 98 sedan is 189K right now and my 97 red wagon is 227K miles, Both still running and driving, I see the people who bought them everyday.....

They are good cars, IF I needed a car in a pinch I would get one again..

Now that I think about it, the escort is not such a bad car. My friend has a 1998 red escort zx2, base model...the only option he got was the powered mirrors...and he doesn't know the meaning of "car care", but it still runs pretty well

And, it is pretty fast for being a poorly maintained, all stock car...kinda fun to drive. The car does feature things that all cars should, but don't, have, such as folding rear seats (stupid buick) and emergency brake lever (as opposed to pedal).

Sure, since he doesn't believe in car care his ride has the stopping distance of a semi, and his solution to everything is to just get the "check engine" light reset by clearing the error codes, his car has seen better days, but at its core, it is still a nice ride. Maybe there is something to the escort longevity.

BTW, how hard is it to replace the AC controls in the 98 zx2? Just out of curiosity.

Honestly, I have no clue. I have a manual to refer to, if you want me to look it up.

Ford built a great car in the 2nd and 3rd gen Escorts. They take a beating and still run great.

I have owned 2: 1991's, 1: 1992, 1: 1996, 1: 1989, and a 1991 Mercury Tracer. All have exceptional cars. Even the 1989 car stood up to having EVERY side of the car wrecked, but the engine NEVER failed to start and it always ran.

I would buy another if Ford still built them. Unfortunatly, I do not think the Focus was a worthy replacement for the Escort.

Here are two pictures of some of my babies. The green one was going on her last ride.

Yeah, but I live right next to Ohio where there is no state vehicle inspection and anything that can move under its own power is good to go, no matter how beat and ratty.:lol::lol::lol::lol:

j/k, mostly....

But where I live, our cars may be rusty, but the tailpipes blow out clean air.

I gotta get a smog check here too, the EPA doesn't believe that it isn't us, but dirty air blowing in from Ohio. On a windy day I can smell the Browns and Bengals.:lol::lol::lol:

Not that I give a crap about football, but one Steeler loss and one Browns win, and the records will be the same.

I was impressed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in the playoffs. Oh wait...nevermind.
