Is it true that you can get a check engine alert light on your dash if you don't put on your gas cap right? If so what do you do and should you clear it by disconnecting the battery?:unsure:
 
Yes it is true. Has to do with the emissions system (venting and purging of air within the tank in this case).



Turn of the vehicle, remove the cap and clean of the sealing ring, reinstall it. Generally a few on/off cycles later it will reset on its own.



A cycle consist of a cold start to a complete warm up.
 
On my old S-10 blazer(96) disconnecting the battery would work also. Don't know on the trac.

I learned my lesson on the five trips to the dealership for my wife.
