All Over the East Coast,
Just a short story of my interaction with a Ford dealer today concerning the 2007 J2 Limited with 9,000 miles for my father.

Condition: Either the dealer or the previous owner washed it with crappy mitts or sponges; the clearcoat required, at a minimum, two cutting polishes and one finishing. There were a few nicks that I'd need to use the Langka kit on. The rear driver's side molding (the piece above the exhaust pipe) was nicked pretty badly, either because the owner lived on a dirt/grave road or drove on fairly highly salted/cindered roadways in only one winter. The black pieces between the front and rear passenger door windows had a fairly large scrape--one that could not be buffed, but instead, would easily be replaced. The bed had gravel remnants, and in the space between the rear left taillight and body, small pieces of gravel remained. The right rear taillight was scuffed. I really got the feeling the dealer simply wanted to move this more than make it pretty to sell.

Price: $22,995 (+ tax, tags). I asked the sales manager a few weeks ago as to the cost of adding the premium sound system (sub, etc.) and he quoted me $600 for the complete install. I also wanted the 7/100 warranty as my dad will keep this for a long time.

Negotiations:

The price with tax, tags, and the add-ons as I calculated would be about $27,500. But, I was not going to pay that much. The guy began with what do I want to pay. I avoided the number, but instead had him focus on the cost of the warranty and asked him to give me a price.

He came back with, as expected, $27,000 and change. No way--not for a vehicle that will be two model years old in a month and a half.

I told him that we better start working it lower. After some maneuvering, I told him that I'd go $23,000 cash and sign on the line immediately (I hate the lowball-highball route, but it was obvious they used it. I regret simply not walking in, telling him a price, and if he says no, simply leaving.). He asked me how I arrived at that low figure. I told him the model year change, the exterior condition, the left rear body molding, the rear taillight, and the scrape on the passenger side door molding. I also told him that the sales manager mentioned it has been on the lot since May, and that previously, I could tell it was owned, repossessed, purchased by a Nissan dealer, and transferred to them. Essentially, I knew more than he did, and I could tell it pissed him off. He told me to be patient while he went to the "guy in the back." (I cannot stand this charade.)

He came back with $26,400, plus I would be responsible for paying for the door molding and installation. He proceeded to justify the price based on the upgraded system: I was getting a $1200 upgrade for $600. I told him that the manager told me $600, and I am getting no favor by decreasing the price because I did not start at $1200. He then told me that the warranty lists at $3400, but I am getting it at $2200. I told him that no dealer sells it for $3400, and that I could go to the dealer from which my '04 came and get it for $2,200. Again, he is not saving me anything. He then again mentioned the molding.

At this point, I had enough. I told him that these are $50 parts. I also told him that it's obvious that, despite the dealer and whoever else calling my folks three times over the last three weeks to see if they were interested, that they did not want to sell this vehicle. I wished him well, and left. I fully would have gone to $24,000, and had he come back with $25,000 or so, would have stopped at $24,500 or so (out the door). But the $600 decrease plus "you pay for the molding" and the bullsh!t "savings" comments pissed me off. Oh, and the "we priced this low to start so we don't have to negotiate." No, the market controls the price, as does the condition. (If only I could access the DMV auction sales price.)

I can tell you dealer auction stats. Can you get the vin? If not, tell me everything you know about the truck and I'll look it up.

Actually this vehicle was already sold and Ford got their money. This is just a used car sale. I can't imagine paying 24,000 for a used vehicle. Most people don't buy new vehicles that cost that much. It must be something special.

Since I don't know the specs, I guessed. How do you like them apples?

Nelson:

It's a low-mileage Gen 2. Originally, we were going to go with a new Gen 2, but the idea of a $35,000 Trac that he'll put, at most, 7.5K miles/year on was not going to happen. I don't mind that for me, but I also would put more than 7.5K/year on it. Most people may not buy new vehicles at that cost; that's their prerogative. Assuming the world does not implode between now and next year, I fully intent to snag an Adrenalin for myself. :)

Andy: I sent you an IM. If you can run for it and e-mail me a screen shot (remove any ID stats), I'd appreciate it.

wow... some guy did that the other day and my dad had him in and out with in 2hrs with the deal completely done.

cuz he, like u did said he would pay so much in cash, and be done with it... it was for an f150 21k cash...

he needed a work truck cuz his broke down, his words... "my wife isnt gonna like this, this is more of a truck than she thinks we need"

dad goes, wish all sales were that easy!

dont kno what was up ur dealers/salesmans butt

Used car salesmen are an odd breed. That's the main reason my last three purchases have been new. With the rebates and better financing and motivated salesmen, I could always get the same deal on a new car that I could on a used car! I was astounded when I found that out, but it's been true for 12 years now. Maybe it's the type of vehicle we tend to buy, with few frills.

Attn Dingo; Could you forward auction info for 2006 Ford Explorer ,4X4 XLT with 19,000 miles. Need to replace it with a F150 and looking at options of trading or outright sale if possible

Thanks

This has been my experience too many times as well. Don't you hate that you wasted your time with the greedy idiot?

I have found same situation as Dremain. I've never been able to buy a late-model used car at a decent price- I've always been able to find a new vehicle at a great price and with full warranty and much less hassle.

Stupid salespeople will argue all day that a "demo" vehicle with 10,000 miles is good as a new one and retains its price, but if you try to tade your vehicle with 2,000 miles has lost half its value when you want to trade it in, but to buy one like it off the lot, there has been no depreciation.

Glad you were smart enough to walk away from that deal. Salesman was totally trying to rip you off. Unless your in a really bi hurry, let it sit for a couple of weeks then call and tell them this is what your willing to pay and that's it. I would forgo the premium sound system. Just gives them one more negotiating tool and for $600 you can get an after market setup that's just as good if not better.

adam,

he works for ford, remember it is ok for him to be a schmuck

do you think at anytime during your meeting with him, that he might say in his head, geez lets make this deal work as i will have one less suv in my lot. (since there are people knocking down my doors to get into suv's and trucks)

This was one of my comments to him. I said that if I paid $26,000 and tried to trade it back to them tomorrow, he'd give me $15,000 at most. While I realize it'll depreciate some + be subject to a lower value, regardless of new or used, I thought the place was out of its mind to want that much.

It seems so, Gary. I have run into more poor sales and service folks at Ford than good ones. They seem to like to hire idiots.

The idea that it'd be gone was the purpose of my offer. It's been on the lot for about three months. When I saw it, it had cobwebs on the mirrors/doors and exhaust pipe/body.

I also told him that if he gives me a good price, I'll sure as hell be back within a couple days as mine needs the 50K flush and service. He didn't seem to care he'd be gaining two customers on one sale (since my dealership closed as part of Fords last consolidation).

I always ask for the fleet manager. Even if it is a used car. Of course that was with the dealship I used before they closed. Always got my price.

Maybe you could try that route. Give them your drive out price and phone # and walk away. That has never failed me but once. That was for a firebird formula back in, late '70s..

Demo vehicles are often as abused as much as a rental fleet vehicle. We leased a demo '04 Merc Mountaineer. We got it with about 8k miles for a 36 mo lease. Starting having problems with the tranny at 11k miles. Got a lemon law settlement at 34k miles. Coincidence that it was a demo and possibly run hard? I dunno.

The point is that a demo is no better than any other used car of the same year, same mileage, and may be even worth less the longer it has sat idle.

adam,

i am sure if you turn it down, it will be there at least another 3 months with rusted rotors.

tjr,

true , they claim the demo is like brand new and you will find they are beat down in most cases by the sales staff. i never forget when i looked at a demo vette, and the ashtray was filled with butts not to mention the empty beer can behind the seat. it was the sales managers demo

Just for comparison, I found this 2007 J2 Limited listed here in IL. Seems to be a loaded, (even has the overhead DVD player) V8 4X4. 23,185 miles, listed for $19,995. About the only things it doesn't appear to have are adjustable pedals and the navigation system. I think it has heated, leather seats.

Serves him right Adam! I bet he is sitting back right now thinking...why didn't you just take the money! And his boss is saying...why didn't you come to me we could have worked something out! He was probably only thinkiing of the loan they had to pay off when they got the trade in and now to make a commission. He definately could not think outside the box!

HA Dingo! Find him an ST at auction, and he and his brother can fly down and drive it back! Problem solved! ;) j/k! :D
