I have put New Plugs, New Cap, New Rotor, New Wires.

This is what happened.

It wouldn`t start when I got it. Cranked fast and acted like it wanted to start. So I checked plugs,"old and wore down with a gap of 0.50. Regapped to spec. 0.32 , cleaned rotor, and cap. Then the engine started but a severe miss. So while it is running I pulled #1 plug wire, no change in engine sound. But I could hear the spark jumping but it was orange. Same for #2 plug wire. Then pulled #3 then #4 and the engine died for each . So put new plugs, wires, cap and rotor button. But still have the exact same results.

Thought it might be out of time. Checked timing belt and timing marks, all OK. Set at 10 degrees.

Maybe the injector wires got switched on 1 and 2-- Nope-- they were ok.

The orange spark is another concern. Can a weak ignition coil cause this? A new ignition coil is $32.00

I hope it isn`t the spark control module, Costs $240.00

Even with low compression, wouldn`t the engine sound a little worse when plug wire is pulled off???

I have been going crazy trying to figure this one out.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I bet the head gasket is blown between the 2 cylinders or..... bad head......

Week spark can cause an issue, OR bad injectors, BUT if there is 1 igniter or coil on the car and the cap and wires and plugs are good, that leaves the last thing..

this is the EXACT same thing my escort did when it blew the head gasket..

Thanks Todd, that sounds logical, will pull head off this weekend if I can`t figure out any other causes. Am trying to Not spend too much to get this car running. Interior is clean and body has no rust.:unsure:

Going to try swapping 3 and 4 injectors with 1 and 2 and see what happens.

Any other suggestions.

Thanks

Do a compression test first !!!!!!

i would not rip a head off before testing. because if the compression is good, you have other things to check..

I gave mine away last summer when cleaning out garage, along with a craftsman timing gun, didn`t think I would need them anymore. guess I`ll have to find a buddy with one.

Thanks.

Jimmy,

You give them a credit card, they put a "hold" on the card and rent you the tool....

Once returned they release the hold...

I have done it many times..
