4x4 slamming in/ not working

Hey guys, 2004 sport trac adrenalin and when all wheels are turning, it used to go into 4x4 high no problem. Now if I have to turn it on while moving, it sounds as if it keeps slamming or banging and doesn't go into 4x4 at all. I'm thinking somethings just worn down and was wondering if anyone had any idea.

Check the fluid, Change if bad, also could be the shift motor going bad.



There have been records of broken internals and forks causing this too.

That happened to me several years ago. I found out that the 4x4 engagement motor was going bad. Pretty easy to replace and was only around $120. Haven't had an issue since. Before I replaced it I could get it to work if I switched it in and out of 4x4 mode while parked to loosen it up.

+1 on fresh fluid, maybe twice over after short drive if last time drained not remembered.



Shift motor replacement is easy and cheap as stated. RockAuto for shift motor.
