Don't mean to butt in here, but why are you guys bucking heads over a gun thread??

Typical Gary crap. Seldom has anything helpful to say, but feels compelled to talk.

Tom

Guys

always am amazed by those that always get into these pissing contests, is always the same people bumping heads.

You want to talk about Guns? lets all have a discourse on guns, one that is intelligent.

One that is usefull, something we can all learn from.

do you know how the gauge system was concieved?

do you know what a caliber is?

A gauge is the amount of lead balls that equal one pound that will fit in a barrel

I:E 12 lead balls, the diameter of the barrel is 12 ga., 20 ga, 20 balls, 28 ga, 28 balls, all the diameter of the barrel

.410 is not a gauge, is a caliber, you can actually shoot .41 cal brass ammo in a .410 shotgun, (not recomended)

How much shot in a double ought 12 ga load ? ( 9, balls, all about 22.cal)

so you hunt with a 7mm rem mag, do you know what cal. it is?

Bill,

That information was great. I did read that on wikipedia, but it was still nice to see here.

Not allowed to hunt deer with a rifle in Ohio. Only Shotgun and Muzzle Loader.

Tom

bill, just want to correct your info on recoil.

The formula for recoil force is one half times mass times velocity squared. The velocity is determined by a few different factors, but the most important factor is the pressure developed by the powder charge.

Felt recoil is also dramatically impacted by the weight of the gun. The gun also behaves like a projectile, in reaction to the shell being fired, and moves in the opposite direction. The mass of the gun dampens the force. The same mass and velocity formula applies to the gun as well. A 1 ounce skeet target load out of a 5lb shotgun actually kicks fairly hard. Out of an 8lb gun, not so much.

I think someone told me before that 7mm was actually 7.2mm so .284 closest to the .270 caliber.

.270 is actually closer to 7mm then 7mm is. (if that makes sense)

This is interesting from a psychological viewpoint but what I really don't understand is, who would want to adopt Gary S.

hand loaded rounds filled with a combination of garlic soaked in Holy water and # 4 shot made from silver.

:lol::lol:

Just make sure it is not berdan primed corrosive.

Why not? I have THOUSANDS of berdan-primed, corrosive rounds in at least 4 calibers:

-7.62x54r (Albanian Surplus, 1970's production) - for M44 and M91/30

-8mm Mauser (Yugoslavian Surplus, 1980's production) - for Turk M38

-7.62x25 (Bulgarian Surplus, 1980's production) - for Romanina TT-33

-.30-06 (Korean Surplus, 1960's production) - For M1 Garand

I also have 1980's surplus Swiss 7.5x55 that is berdan primed, non-corrosive.

Corrosive ammo is not a problem as long as you properly clean after use. This means a patch or two of water, windex or bore cleaner at the range with a patch of gun oil, then a good proper cleaning when I get home.

recoil is related to the mass of the projectile, has nothing to do with the powder load

A one Oz trap load has about 9 lbs of free recoil, a 1 3/4 3 inch mag duck load has about 14 lbs of free recoil

A 460 weatherby mag has about 22 lbs of free recoil.

Thats what you feel. The mass of the load (projectile)

As Rich noted, there is more to it. It's Newtonian Physics. Equal but opposite reaction. F=MxA, Force equals Mass * Acceleration. You accelerate a 175grain slug upto 1250 FPS (feet per second) you get force.

For instance, compare a .223 (5.56 NATO) rifle round vs. a .45ACP at the muzzle:

.45ACP in 230gr FMJ @ 1,010 FPS has a force of 521 foot lbs

.45ACP in 165gr XTP @ 1,325 FPS has a force of 643 foot lbs

.223 in 69gr FMJ @ 2,950 FPS has a force of 1,333 ft lbs

.223 in 77gr FMJ @ 2,750 FPS has a force of 1,293 ft lbs

You will still have both real and perceived recoil with all of these. The .223 is a rifle round with a light-weight AR15 (comming around the 7 lb mark) with balanced recoil spring and piston operation. The .45ACP is a pistol round with a 2.5lb 1911-A1 handgun. The RECEIVED recoil is greater out of the 1911, but the real recoil is greater out of the rifle....

i hope you feel like more of a "man" with your guns.

Actually, I do. I can effectively manage a threat to my family and myself with as little or as much offensive force as I desire. I can put a big hole in something or a small hole. I hope to never have to put any holes in an intruder. I can also rest easily knowing that my wife is proficient enough to protect our family when I am not there.

Does that make HER more of a "man" with my guns?

I'd shoot that squirell with my 12ga...

Shot, skinned, filleted, and roasted, all at the same time. Hope you like a little piece of tail....

Kinda like going after a rabbit with a .30-06.... Skinned and de-boned fairly inefficently.

Most of the people I know who use shotguns to hunt deer will shoot a 12 gauge. I bird hunt and use a 12 gauge, although you can use a 20 gauge as well. We use the 12 gauge because you get more bb's in each shell therefore you have more knockdown power. My guess is the same would be for slugs, the bigger slug, the better knockdown power. As for 870 vs. Mossberg, I know more people that shoot the 870, they are more costly because more people use them, but on the other hand if you need anything done to it if it goes wrong, you'll probably have an easier time repairing the 870. Personally I shoot a Winchester 1300 because I like where the safety is (in front of the trigger guard vs. the 870 having it behind) I find its more natural to have an extended finger and pull back to the trigger vs. having to undo the safety then extend your finger to pull back on the trigger.

My winchester 1300 also has the speed pump, I can rattle off 5 shots before most pump people can get 3 off. Some people that I hunt with think I shoot a semi auto even!:D

R Shek,

This is the gun I got. It is made by Bersa. I got it strictly on price and quality. I looked at over 20 different semi-automatic pistols. Dollar for dollar this gun gave me the nicest feeling for the cheapest price.

I really wanted the Ruger LCP. After holding one in my hand, I figured that was not for me. I could barely get my ring finger on the grip. The Kel-Tec was cheaper, but it felt like a toy gun sold at Wal-Mart.

Glock, too expensive. I forget all the others I looked at. One I really liked. For the life of me, I can not remember the brand. It was used and they wanted over $320.00. For $50.00 more, I figured what the heck.

Took it down to the hills and ran close to 100 rounds through it. Never one misfire. Action ran flawless. Ejected every shell like clockwork. It holds 7 in the clip and one in the hole. At 20', the first time shooting, I was able to get 7 shots within a 4" circle.

So far, I am happy.

Here is the gun....

What do you think?

Nice looking pistol. I've got to get one to carry concealed. I'll have to test drive one of those.

Tom, looks good! You made an excellent choice.

Stand corrected, how many 5 lb skeet guns have you seen?

Skeet? Don't know that I've seen a double at that weight, although I suppose a coach gun would qualify. Plenty of trap guns, though. I own two. A single shot, break action Rossi, and a single shot H&R. There are millions just like them, with brands like NEF, JC Higgins, Sears, Savage, etc. Many are right around 5lbs, give or take a few ounces. THe youth models are under 5lbs. There's a sub 6lb home defense pump shotgun imported under the Escort brand name by NEF.

I wrote that wrong. The gun I got was $270.00 out the door, not $50.00 more than $320.00.

Duh ;)
