This happened to me on a Bronco a few years back. It is the actuator getting weak, you'll have to replace it. Not a bad job, just fiddly. If I remember correctly you'll need a very short 1/4" bolt with a low profile head and a nut to replace the rivet that will need drilled out.

I suggest checking the nuetral/park safety switch. It sounds like it maybe slightly out of alignment.
