What motor works?

On my 2004 4x4 sporttrac, I know that same motor will fit but one guy said an Explorer motor will fit and another said it wouldn't. Will a 2 wheel drive work and change the oil pan? Things I need to know! lol Thanks Friends!

I would use a 04-up motor, because they are said to have the better timing chain components. A explorer motor will work, as well as a ranger. Some have even used 05-09 mustang motors, and just swapped over their intake and stuff. There is a couple, few threads on explorer forum where guys have swapped a 2wd motor into a 4wd with no ill effects mentioned.
