Bill where do you get your data from?

A T2 car is no way 60K race prepped not even brand new. Our race team runs 2 350Z in SCCA and I know for a fact they have less than 40K in the car and they do the work themselves. Don't count shop time to build as most competitive races (to win) know how to wrench and fab.

A new Spec Miata or MazdaSpeed Race Prepped Miata is not 60K. Maybe your high HP cars are, Porsche, Panoz, etc.

And, if your any good of a driver you get most of your parts at cost and your entries paid for. I know as I produce several driver marketing proposals.

You can buy a used E36 M3 for 18-30K turn key race car.

Remember there are a lot of different classes in SCCA.

I can run a Swift open wheel (FF class) brand new at 45K with engine.

Look in the back of SCCA monthly magazine, if your a member, and see all the cars for sale. Few are over 60K and if they are they are Porsche's or ex Grand Am cars.

LOL...you can go get an old CRX, drop an Acura Integra motor in it, tweak the suspension, throw in a cage, seat, harness, and get decent set of tires...you might spend $15,000.

There are plenty of used parts out there and plenty of people parting ways with their cars because THEY put too much money into their cars.

Racing can be cheap if you want it to be.

My brother has an old CRX. He looked into it. Spoke to some of the guys that race CRX's in the SCCA.

It is not that easy.

Tom

I had a fraternity brother that has done that several times. Of course, he was already racing Integras and had lots of spares and sponsors. He built the CRX and a Civis for track. He also built a CRX for the Grassroots Motorsport $2006 Challenge:

As you can read, if you have the time and patience, you can build a decent car for not a lot of money. If you want to have fun, spend less. If you want to win, you will spend much more.

Hell, I've got over $30k invested in my go karts! 2 USED karts, driver safety gear, a trailer, spare parts, getting the engines 'refreshed' with under 20 hours of use on 'em... And I'm JUST now getting a spare engine! It costs me $420 for 2 new sets of tires every race weekend, not to mention fuel and entry fees! And I'm only racing at the local club level. IF I were to race IKF, I'd have to add travel expenses for out of town weekends. You need a budget to go racing, and $30k won't get you far....

I guess I could buy an old 15 year old Escort (they are everywhere) and take it to the drag street.

I could be racing for $100.00.

I guess you can race for less than $30K.

If you want to REALLY race, $30K will get you started if you do darn near everything yourself.

Tom

Tiger,

You must have missed my question. What do you race? You know all about racing, what do you race?

Tom

I want to applaud Snooze and others here for doing racing "right". By that I mean safely and on a track.

There has been a lot of talk about what a man is lately in the E.D. thread. A man, IMHO, is responsible and doesn't endanger others when having fun. Yes, racing can expensive, but a real man (or woman) can "pay to play". Little boys race on the street.

Have fun Way to go folks.

TJR--

A track day, car control clinic, HPDE event is NOT racing. There is no start finish, no timing, no trophies, regulated passing zones which is a joint effort with a "Point" no "point" no pass.

HUGE difference than wheel to wheel racing where your going all out 100%.

The other is 7/10s your ability.

I do agree on the safety issue.

Street racers in Seattle can take their cars every Thursday night for 17.00 and get in as many runs as they can on the drag strip. Open to all cars and levels.

My car will be SCCA certified.

I've also built, maintained, and repaired cars that race in BMW CCA Club Racing events.

SST, I wasn't trying to define Snooze's entertainment as racing so please feel free to direct your clarifications appropriately to whoever called what he did that weekend "racing."

I was just trying to commend Snooze for keeping "it" off the streets.
