After (only) 93,000 miles the transmission on my 2001 ST needs to be rebuilt. I checked eBay for a rebuilt kit but all I could find were already rebuilt transmissions (which would cost me a small fortune to ship and import in the caribbean). Does anyone know where I can order a complete, reliable and hopefully not too expensive rebuilt kit?

Thanks,

Bas

Bas,

I don't think anyone makes or sells complete Automatic Transmission Rebuild Kits since the usual procedure is to only replace the parts that are broken, worn, or out of spec's. You can probably buy gasket and seal kits, as well as valve body kits, etc.

I suppose places like AAMCO or other large transmission repair chains may have kits or packs of parts for specific transmissions so that their tech's don't have to order 100 little parts, and simply order a rebuild kit, but these kits are probably not sold to the public.

You would also need a manual on the transmission to know all the spec's, tolerances, torque spec's etc. Some transmissions require special tools and special assembly and sub assembly sequences. If you don't have the tools, manuals and knowledge, you probably should leave the rebuilding of the transmission to a professional.

I recall a few years ago that there is a performance transmission shop in California that rebuilt the Gen1 5 speed automatics and offered standard, heavy duty, and race ready transmission ranging from about $750 to about $1700 (w/o torque converters). That did not include shipping and there was a $350 core charge on your old tranny that you would get back when they got your old tranny. They also sold some heavy duty parts and valvebody kits for the 5R55E tranny.

The company is called California Performance Transmissions. They are still in business and have been even doing work for "OverHaulin" the TV show. I looked them up about 6-8 years ago, so I'm sure their prices are much higher now.

You might want to check with IPT Performance Transmissions. The build Ford racing transmission and sell a heavy duty/racing version of the 5R55E for around $2800, and they claim they will ship to anywhere in the world? If it cost more to ship your old tranny back, it might be better to just pay the core charge and keep your old tranny and sell if for scrap or parts over there?

I will give my motor builder racing freind a call. He rebuilds any type of ford auto trans himself. He gets his kits somewhere. Hard parts will be seperate from the kits if needed.

I know he doesnt get them from ford. I just dont remember the name of the place, here in houston.

There are several places in Houston that sell parts for automatic transmissions. At least there were 20 years ago when I last did a rebuild! I assume there are places on the internet that will ship parts as well. Your first step should be to get a manual. Next you will need a few special tools, which the manual should show you. If you want to do this all at once, you'll probably have to get all of the little clutches, bearings, bushings, seals, etc. up front. You're going to need all new seals anyway. If you have time, take it all apart first, taking pictures and marking the pieces as they come out, and then order only the parts you need after it's apart.

THanks for the advice. I'm not going to rebuild the transmission myself. It's actually going to be done by a trans specialist, who has all the tools, the computer, manual ect. However, he's doing it in his spare time (instead of doing it at the transmission shop he works at, which would be more expensive). So he asked me to buy the parts myself and than he'll do the building.

Bas,

It sounds like you already have a solution, if you can you buy the parts at your friend's transmission shop? That way if he finds a part that needs replacing, you can just go buy it? He could probably give you a list of standard kits and part like gaskets and seals that you will always need, and then buy what ever he finds wrong with the tranny when he tears it down.

Here is a wholesale order house. Also the pdf file breakdown.

Ignore the 4R44E at the end of the link. That page covers the 5R55E also..

Eddie,

That's a great site for transmission parts. I have never stumbled across them before, they they definitely have almost anything you would need to rebuild an automatic tranny. Thanks for the post.
