i am now considering a 09 toyota 4runner as a replacement for my trac. it is still a very difficult decision for me as i have had 3 tracs and still love the way they look. but i have issues with my 07 i feel are not acceptable for a 40K vehicle. still considering an 09 trac but maybe its time for a change as i really am not utilizing the carge bed and with a vehicle like the 4runner, i will be able to get my dog in with no difficulty and have plenty of room.

i was looking at the V-8 limited or possible sport.

imo, the quality of the 4runner is much better than the trac and it will probably fit my needs better.

anyone have one?

I don't own one, but I've driven them quite a few times as rentals and I wasn't impressed.

IMO, the Nissan Pathfinder is a much nicer vehicle. If you need something even bigger, the Nissan Armada is also very nice, and I'm sure there are great incentives/discounts on that one right now because of gas prices. (I don't know anything about the reliability of either, just my impressions from behind the wheel.)

We actually have a Honda Pilot in addition to my Trac, and we've been very pleased with that for a little over two years now.

I know 2 people that each have a 4WD Forerunner with over 400,000 kilometers ( 250,000 miles) on them and they don,t plan to trade them soon.

My work vehicle is an '05 4-runner and 75+% of my work driving is off-the-hardtop on often extremely difficult two-track (deep ruts, heavy mud/deep water, high grades, poor entry/exit angles, etc.). The thing has been basically unstoppable and pretty darn comfortable too. I got it with ~24K on it and have taken it to nearly 50K so far. Lack of ground clearance and the inability (on the '05) to turn off the VSC have been my biggest complaints. I did fry the ECM somehow, but it was a warranty replacement...the vehicle actually performed better for me with the ECM out of comish. as the VSC was off; however, shift points were off and very hard. In 4low with the center differential locked (with decent offroad tires), the thing will climb walls. The ST should not be compared to the 4-runner in offroad capability...there is no comparison. The 4-runner feels rather tall on lateral grades, but I've never found it unstable. The engine, transmission, and drive components have been generally flawless, and mine have taken some severe beatings.

We have an 04 Explorer EB in addition to 05 ST. It has plenty of room and rides very comfortably even for my little yorkie.:)

I say go for it and then keep your mouth shut about how much better built, better looking, better riding, 50 MPG it gets, quieter, etc., etc., etc. you think it is.

tom,

better looking, no, i still think the trac looks better

better built, if you knew vehicles other than your trac and boy racer escort (oh wait, i am still looking for the sub 16 second 1/4 mile time slip), you would understand!

Gary,

The engine isn't finished. I was layed off for 7 weeks this summer and got into some financial woes. Sorry I could not get it running.

I do know vehicles. I also know what a shift key is too.

Tom

tom.

as i said to you before, i am sorry you were unemployed for that time.

it has been appox at least 1.5 years you were talking crap about how it willl beat my 350.

well now that you employed, you should not have to spend much to get the escort into the 15's

Gary,

I need another 2 to 3 grand for support equipment. The engine is from a WRC car that will support 450 HP in stock form. The clutch will be a custom built unit along with small extra's like an aftermarket computer system.

Just minor goodies...you know. When I was union, I was making more money than I could spend. Since I am out of the union, I am juat about poor. You know how that is.

Tom

where was your union "protection" when you were layed off ?

your union rep should have been there to save your job. oh well

so is it safe to say you have a real job now?

good luck on the car , i guess we are just going to have to wait another few years

My union protection was there. I was guarenteed my job back when they call people back. I took another position in the same company.

I can go back to the union within 9 months, so there are still there for me.

FWIW, I am now a foreman over the same guys I worked with. If the company thinks the hourly guys are lazy, they are stupid. I will not comment any further than that.

Tom

tom.

awesome, that is great.

now i must concentrate on what colour and trim level i am getting in my better built 4runner :p

Hopefully that means you will leave here too.

You constant Ford bashing comments are getting really old. This is a Ford website and the majority of us here are Ford people. We don't give a crap about Toyota.

Neither does Ford, clearly. That's why they continue to fail.

Maybe Ford and others here will care more about Toyota when they buy out Ford (bails them out) in a fire sale!
