Surf racks

Son has '01 ST and wants to put racks on to carry surfboards. I don't particularly want to drop $350 for set of new Thule racks. Anyone have any ideas? He won't use it that often so don't want to spend a lot. Thanks!

For part time. rubber bungee some 1x4's across the rails. Could round the ends and paint them black. cushions where the boards will be straped. $20 to $30, IMO

You should be able to pick up a good set of racks used and just buy the clamps for the Sport Trac. $350 is a small price to pay when you think of a surfboard flying off the vehicle and going through the window of someone else's vehicle.



I have had a set of Yakima racks for 25 years and they have been a great investment as I went from surfboards, to bikes, to kayaks and lumber at Home Depot.

If you use the 1x4s, I suggest using U-bolts, not bungees, to fasten them to the rails.
