Like the title says, I'm looking for a tail gate handle for a 2008 sport trac, that has a lock hole, and the hole for a back-up camera.

My body shop guy says it has to be a smooth handle, (no texture), cause the paint won't stick to the textured area. (I'm not a painter, so I don't know). Any ideas where to get one?? Looked on E-bay, and Amazon, to no avail.

Get a chrome one?

I thought about a chrome one, or even just leaving it black, but this Adrenalin I bought came with a factory painted to match handle, and I kinda wanted to keep it that way. I could always go with the camera that fastens to the tag cover, but we have one that way, and I'm always afraid of breaking it off.

Besides, the camera in the handle has a lot cleaner look, IMO.

Never thought about a wrap.

Hey Risky. Plenty of good advice already given, but I used the paint code to order base and clear from automotivetouchup.com and painted my tailgate handle when adding a backup camera. The paint is an exact match and after several years still looks brand new. Maybe not the cheapest way to go, but I needed to re-paint a few other items at the same time anyway.

Now, that looks really sharp !!!!! Think I am going to go with a rear view mirror with the camera in it. Lock Pick said their product would not work on my 2008 system. AND, I can keep my OEM unit intact.

I went with the emblem mounted camera, allot of work though, required cutting, and some refinishing of the tailgate, not a simple task.

I agree with the above post about painting textured/smooth surface. It makes no difference, if anything (in my experience) smooth surfaces are more difficult to get a quality finish on. The textured surface provides forgiveness to the finish, and more bonding area.

Don't be shy about trying the paint, it isn't that tough, just follow the directions of where you buy it. Maybe find something around the house (of a similar material) to practice on first, a guinea pig.
My local NAPA has a guy in house that makes one off color matched spray bombs. He always does a great job. I have followed his directions and have always been happy with the results. I would not recommend a generic 'color match', it needs to be pretty much a perfect match sitting in the middle of your tailgate. If it's off by much it will stick out like a soar thumb.
It's plastic, so be sure to use an adhesion promoter. A good high build primer (a couple of extra coats might deal with a light texturing too if that's a visual concern), a quality color matched paint and a couple of layers of clear coat to finish it off.

Probably the most challenging task is fishing the wiring down through an opening in the bottom of the tailgate and then through the spare tire crank hole in the bed to run it up front. Don't leave it too tight and make sure it's not going to get pinched.

I would strongly recommend wearing a mask too, even outdoors. Spray paints, especially automotive grade, are loaded with some nasty stuff.

This prob isnt the answer you are looking for but just a thought, why not drill a hole in the one that came on it and mount the camera in it with epoxy for jb weld, ive done it before when adding cameras in my grille and trunk bc i like them to be "hidden" so to speak and drilling and mounting inside objects has always worked 100% for me. I would def not skimp on camera and go with the newest OEM you can find bc quality counts and year released has alot of changes in picture.. good luck!

Picture of emblem mounted camera.
Stock emblem isn't big enough to accommodate a camera, I tried.
This one is from an F150. (Refinished red/black to match the truck)
It did require a bit of trimming of the tailgate behind the emblem because of camera depth.
I like the viewing angle it gives. Lots behind me and I can see my hitch receiver when hooking up to the boat. Excellent picture quality.

Am having one installed that is in the rear view mirror, this Saturday. I kinda like the factory unit with the navigation in it. I decided I want to keep the truck original as long as the navigation stereo holds up.

Yeah, there is something to be said for keeping it original.
I'm not very good at that....... to my VERY PATIENT wife's dismay.

In the rear view mirror is a logical place for the camera view, it's already where we look instinctively when backing up.

Weather permitting, will take pics of the finished product. "Supposed" to get some snow this week-end possibly.
