Looks like Mercedes decided to bring the smart car to the states after all.

The first time I saw those cars was on a Medeterranien deployment back in 2000. I thought they ware the coolest looking cars, but didn't think they would do well in the states due to thier small size. Seemed like it would be dangerous next to an expedition or suburban...

Great news... at least we have more options to choose from for fuel-efficient commuter cars. I'm seeing more and more small cars on the road, so perhaps the love affair with trucks and SUV's is starting to lose its appeal.

Yes, I think it is "great news" that there are more choices.

I just hope that this doesn't add fuel for those that like to villify truck and suv drivers.

Yeah, a Scion xB is high on my list for replacement rides when I decide to trade in my Matrix.

Why not drive the Matrix for 250,000 miles? Think it will last that long?

Tom

While I'm sure it would run 250,000 miles, I usually only keep a car 5 to 6 years max. Usually just ready for a change by then, like most folks.

I keep mine 10 years. That is why I buy Fords. I know they will last that long...hmmm...My 1996 Escort GT is 10 this year. I guess it will keep it for the next 10 since I got her 3 years ago.

Tom

There were a million of those beasts in Rome. Then again, I think I saw perhaps five SUVs the three weeks I was there.

My guess is give them a year or two and you'll see a huge fan base. They've only been in Canada for a year or so and already they are getting to be hugely popular for a commuter vehicle.

Not sure if I'd want one myself, but they do offer you one thing the ST can never give. No more parallel parking! You just back right up to the curb and your done.

BTW, anybody knows what happens when an Hummer hits a smart car??? That's easy, the hummer driver sues for whiplash!:lol:

I have no doubt we'll see more SmartCars on the roads than Hummers in a year or two. I still only see a handful of H2's and H3's in my area. Their drivers are always good for a laugh or two at the local shopping mall trying to park. I've already whipped into the end spot at the far end of the mall in my 'trix and walked to the door by the time they've climbed down from their macho rides :)

What happens when a Hummer hits a smart car?

Nothing, we've got speed bumps bigger than those things. I saw a kid riding a go cart and I'm willing to bet it was bigger, and more fun; at least, I wasn't laughing at him.

Hitting a concrete wall at 70 mph.

Wow, nice video. See how the passenger compartment maintained integrity for that impact? A ST would have rolled over... lol.

There is a glass tower just off the autobahn in Germany where those things are stacked about 15 high in the air. They would make great cars for the city folk.
