So we are doing some research regarding new siding on our 1952 home. We have aluminum siding over old painted wooden siding. We are pretty sure the wood siding has lead paint.

Does anyone know if there are specific disposal rules or can we just rip it off and toss it in a dumpster?

You will probably need to check with the local officials and your solid waste disposal company? Rules vary by state, county and local community. There are some jurisdictions that require you to use a licensed and approved lead paint abatement company to remove any wood or trim painted with lead based paint.

There is really no danger in leaded paint unless you ingest it. The lead paint ban was to protect kids who might chew on window sills or otherwise ingest lead paint. As long as the paint is stuck on the wood, it should not cause a problem. If the paint is flaking off, you should wear a mask and put some tarps down to catch the paint that chips off during removal.

regardless of the local rules, if you do it yourself, you should wear a mask and a tyvek suit, and place plastic on the ground, and bag the wood in plastic to dispose..

I was recently certified as a lead renovator. If you remove the said siding that has lead based paint on it, try to remove the existing siding in whole and intact. You MUST wrap the bundled material in plastic and duct tape the openings. Yes, it's a pain, but the only way you can safely dispose of lead painted material like siding. Simply dispose at a landfill. IF you disturb the paint (By making DUST) there are a lot of rules and regulations you must abide by. In any state. This is regulated by the EPA. Main thing about lead based paint... do not ingest it or allow dust to contaminate anything.
