BIG Thanks for the responses guys.

I do have a small hand held CB unit i use but it is rather loud ( static ).

I'm heading to Man for a wedding for my inlaws, heading up to Lundar/Fisher Branch, sounds fun to me :(

I use to have a detector a long time ago, 20+ years and it served me well back in the day.

I'll be heading up through Madison Wisc., plan on stopping near there for fist leg of the trip, up the I90 and I94, any good shopping places ( factory outlets ) near there, want to keep the wife happy:D

This should take care of any radar trap you run across.

LOL I know a few of you youngins have never even seen one of these before. Imagine this thing sitting on your dash.

Old skool. I remember those. I also remember when Car & Driver did a radar detector test about 20 years ago and the Fuzzbuster did very well. They opened it up and found Escort innards inside. Not in every Fuzzbuster...just the one they sent to Car & Driver.

Your only defense against laser if they they shoot it at a car in front of you. If you're the lead car, even a Valentine is only good for letting you know to pull over and get out your license and registration. I know this first-hand. ;)

I had a Fuzzbuster and a Whistler detector many-many years ago and they only lasted about a year and died.

The cheap Cobra units work very well and have lasted 10-12 years now. I just bought a new Cobra ($70) only because the windshield mounts did not work well on my Mercedes. The new model has a better mounting system and the detector does not bounce up and down like the old ones did.

Yes you can spend $500 on a top of the line detector if you are an avid speeder, but for the average guy the detectors that cost less than $100 will be just fine.

I personally have never gotten a speeding ticket while using my Cobra's for the past 12 years with the one exception of when I did not know the speed limit had dropped. It detected the laser well before I got within tracking range, but I assumed the speed limit was still 70 MPH and did not need to slow down, however I did not see the sign that lowered the speed limit to 60 MPH. Now with my TomTom GPS speeding alert system, I will know when the speed limit drops and I will know to reduce my speed. Had I been using the TomTom Speed alert I would not have gotten that ticket.

Yeh the FuzzBuster is even older than me at 42. I never saw one used in a car but when I was a young kid late 70's early 80's there was a outdated FuzzBuster sitting on the shelf in the garage of every friend I had who's parents had a little money.

I had one of those given to me when I was a kid in college as a prank. I kept it under the seat and would mess with the knob on it to have a little fun with some of my dorm mates that had too much to drink. Crank the gain on that FuzzBuster and it would go off in the middle of the woods!

I borrowed a friend's Sport Radar Gun and was surprised how well it worked to get speeds on vehicles passing my house. From .2 mile away, a quick pull of the trigger, and within milliseconds, I had their speed. It was accurate, as I had a friend drive and tell me his speed and the unit was right.

I decided to aim it at my Cobra radar detector, which was already powered on, and pulled the trigger. The Cobra SLOWLY went from a slow beep to a fast beep. All this time, I thought a slow beep meant that the radar unit was far away. It doesn't. Cobra must have been lobbied by some law enforcement agencies to enable the beeps slowly. I haven't tested any other detector.

Fact is, if the officer doesn't have the gun on all the time, and pointed downrange, your detector is useless. All he needs to do is flip on the gun and he has your speed. If you're around other large objects, the gun will pick those up and not you, for example, a tractor trailer next to you. But, if you are out in front of a pack travelling at the same speed, consider yourself busted.

I have been using detectors since my first warning in 1992. I have never received a ticket since then. I keep my speed 10mph over the speed limit, max, most of the time. I probably don't even need a detector.

You're still just testing a ..........................................................Cobra. And a Bushnel is not a fair comparison to real police radar.

Correct, none of this was intended to be a test, just an example of what I experienced. So, everyone, please disregard anything I said as worthy info.

Wasn't disputing your post, Pat, as the bulk of it is right on. Just saying...........

BTW, I have a Bushnel ............ and an X-band antenna/transmitter, and a K-band radar . . . . . for detector "testing". :lol::lol::lol: Also tests brake lights! :p:p:p
