Why is there desperation and poverty in this country of the magnitude that we see in the people looting and raping in N.O.?

And, I recognize that that same level of desperation is felt by many people in several of our large inner cities.

And, that same level of poverty is in several rural all-white communities in several states (Kentucky, Tennessee, etc), so I am not trying to portray this as a race thing.

Now, please don't think I am a bleeding heart liberal as I ask that question, because I am not.

But, the question stands, and it is a serious one....

"What the HELL is wrong with this country? Why is this happening and how do we stop it?"

No Disipline No Respect taught and nothing to Believe in anymore...that's how I see where we as a country and a people went wrong.

Keeping race out of it...

I simply am embarassed at what is occuring in New Orleans. Desperation yes, but the extent of the lawlessness is unimaginable. Civility was thrown out the window, and it's a Lord of the Flies.

I'll keep it at that.

I agree with you... I can see looting food/water (basic needs).. but when you steal a EMT vehicle or rob someone?....

Don't worry about it tho.. the national guard is heading down there and from what I heard from my commander its gonna be a "no-tolerance" environment... there is just no excuse for that type of behavior and as far as I am concerned - people like this should be removed from our society...

Fewer and fewer are taught they have the power to change what is going on around them. More and more people believe it is not their fault, that someone else is to blame. Teaching someone to take responsibility for their own actions is not "politically correct". And I don't think this is a race thing either. I think it is something that is epidemic throughout our society.

People are the problem.

We're a country that quickly forgets.

We're a country that can be attacked one day, and forget why we're fighting.

We're a country that lets things slide.

We're a country with people who don't care. People who are too busy worried about the other.

We're a country that suffers from it's actions.

We're a country that make bad decisions, along with some good ones.

The problem?

The people.

I am an American. I love this country. But I dislike a lot of its people. Not all, but those who pillage and rape towns that are distress. People who bitch about things but are too afraid to fight for their beliefs.

People who feed on our country.

The lazy people.

Those who desire much, but won't work for it.

We're in trouble people. Look how easy it is for civil war to start. Imagine two or three other major cities falling into a battle like New Orleans.

The future looks grimm. I love this country, just not all the people.

This has nothing to do with race. I remember seeing a white guy on TV busting up a slot machine to loot the money from it. Being an idiot has nothing to do with the color of one's skin.

Just saw this on a Yahoo board:

If you want your mother to take care of you, thats called maternalism.

If You want your father to take care of you, thats called paternalism.

If you want your commrad to take care of you, thats called communism.

If you want your goverment to take care of you, thats called socialism.

If you want to take care of yourself, that called Americanism.

John,

I over look pretty much of what most everyone opinionated posts. Your post to this thread, however I will not over look. Thinking like that is the beginning of why this country is screwed up in the first place. It's stems from lack of you being taught "respect" "disciplin" and in your case just plain "manners".

I've seen more White people or Asian people or American Indian people do just as much or worse in times of disaster, even in times of no disasters. So your comment was just plain out of meaness towards one race. Furthemore, in the state you claim to be from, it was the blacks that kept things going for the slave owners years ago.

If you feel that way it's your right. But "respect" how others might feel of things you post. If you feel that way ...it's on you but Disipline yourself to keep your "disrespectful" comments to yourself. And lastly, If you feel that way, You have the right, but have some "common manners" in what is mixed company. Do not bring it here. This site is visited by MANY walks of life. I refuse to keep quiet when Someone of your thinking Post some thing like that

Sorry all, most of you know I'm a peaceful soul. So I apoligize to you of the forum.

No need to apologize GM!! I agree with you wholehearted! That type of comment isn't suitable for here and should never have happened. I couldn't believe what I saw when I read it.

John,

Spoken like a true Klansman. It's your kind of thinking that keeps the fires of hatred burning.

Now you can crawl back under your rock and stay there!

...Rich

John, your contribution, for lack of a better word, is off base and has no place on these boards, nor any other boards. Please do not continue. If you do, I will be among the first to ask for your removal. And only 8 posts!

Like Adam, I have this sense of embarassment. I'm not in their shoes (some don't have shoes), but I can't imagine being that desperate that quickly to throw all semblence of civilization out the window.

It's tough to really judge since the media focuses on the sensational. I really believe that MOST people in New Orleans are trying to take care of each other.

I heard a guy talking today who said that New Orleans was getting its comeuppance from God. New Orleans for years has been the city of sin, with all the partying, sex, booze, drugs, Mardi Gras (that mocks God because it is OK to sin all day until midnight and then your sins are automatically forgiven). All the sin in New Orleans attracts all the low lifes and scum of the earth, and many of them stay and live there to enjoy the party atmosphere.

At first I thought he was a nut job, but now I kind of have to wonder if God is punishing our modern-day Sodom and Gomorrah.
