Sure, Fmarano I get that Christmas has little to do with Christianity these days. Still I can't help but be amused by the irony and hypocrisy of it all.

Oh well. I'm sure most kids would have received a Jesus doll with about as much enthusiasm as a toothbrush on Halloween anyway.

The point is that not every kid who is going to recieve a toy from Toys for Tots believes in Jesus. They aren't going to ask every kid what religion they believe in before they hand out toys. The problem is now they rejected the jesus toy so some catholics are going to be angry. The situation will turn a organization who is helping kids into some organization who hates jesus and is funding terrorist groups.

Correct me if I'm wrong--but I thought that with Toys for Tots, after the toys are collected, the parents get to come into the location and select toys for their youngsters. If that's the case, what's the problem with this? It's not like some Muslim kid is going to accidentally be given a Jesus doll--that kid's parents would never select that.

Or doesn't Toys for Tots work that way? Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong holiday toy charity.

I wonder if they're reprogrammable--so you can hook your Jesus up to your computer via USB, and make him say other things. Image the fun you could have...

Nothing like celebrating the birth of christ by shoving three AAA batteries up his arse ...I don't think christian kids would even play with that thing. I think it's creepy.

At first they wouldn't accept a 400 doll donation, then they changed that decision a couple of days later. If you are not a Christian, why would you celebrate Christmas anyway:unsure:. Christmas is all about Christ or at least it is supposed to be.

That was my point about the hypcrisy, C.

Not to steal my own thread, but...

I told my kids this year they were not getting presents. Instead, we were going to take the money and give it to charity. I told them about all the poor, homeless families with kids that are less fortunate than they are. Then I reminded them about baby Jesus' birth and how if not for charity and the offering of a stable for his birth our savior might never have been born and survived.

That's when my youngest said: "It's a deal Dad! Let's give our Christmas gift money to the first family we find that has a poor little child born of a virgin mother!"

If you are not a Christian, why would you celebrate Christmas anyway

Because of the commercialism that Christmas has generated it's not about "Christ" anymore. I'm one of those part-time "Christians" that only go to church only on X-mas eve. A few years ago when we were getting ready to go to services my young son says "what's x-mas got to do with church anyway"! I knew right then he had a lot to learn and it's not like he never went to church before. It's just how commercial x-mas has become. Especially when you have kids.

TomT, you can blame that on commercialism, or you can blame that on the fact that you go to church once a year.

I'm not judging, I'm just "saying"... ;)

BTW, it's been my kids as of late that have been dragging me to church!

As a government entity, Marines "don't profess one religion over another," Grein said Tuesday. "We can't take a chance on sending a talking Jesus doll to a Jewish family or a Muslim family."

HELLO...McFly! Jewish and Muslim families don't celebrate Christmas, so why would you give them a Christmas present?

I was going to say something about Toys for Tots giving holiday presents, but their mission statement explicitly states they are Christmas presents, not any other holiday's presents.

In the end though, they are giving needy kids toys. Should it matter that it's for Christmas? At that point, should they also make sure that none of the toys can offend the child's religion? Shave the beard, remove the battery, and call it a Ken doll going to a toga party :p

U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program

MISSION: The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

Ok. Maybe I am confused. If in the previous quote they say they don't profess one religion over another, then why do they give "Christmas" gifts?

Also look at this header from the same web site:

Toys for Tots is a non-profit organization, not attached to the US government, so why do they pretend they need to worry about the "Marines" professing a religion. It is just a name for an organization, like Kentucky Fried Chicken. You don't see Pam Anderson protesting at the Capital building in Frankfort about mistreatment of chickens do you?

I guess my brain is just too tiny to figure this out.
