need help removing the spare tire

I finally got my lazy butt up to remove the spare and I ran into a problem. I couldn't get the tool to bite so the spare would lower. I'm thinking the lift mis-aligned some things. anyone know how to get the spare out any other way? any help is greatly appreciated.

Jeff - did you do a body lift? They say to drill a hole in the plastic below the existing one. If you pry up that plastic and then use a flash light you can see it is now three inches lower. You can't use the original hole with out rubbing the jack bar against the tailgate.
