I, Barack Obama

Wednesday, June 03, 2009

By Terence P. Jeffrey

President Obama said Monday that General Motors bankruptcy plan

is viable, achievable and will help automaker move toward profitability.

President Obama used the first-person singular pronoun "I" 34 times on Monday when he announced he was nationalizing General Motors.

He used Congress once and law not at all.

As Obama described it, the government takeover of General Motors was Obamas decision made for Obamas reasons.

Just over two months ago, I spoke with you in this same spot about the challenges facing our auto industry, and I laid out what needed to be done to save two of America's storied automakers, said Obama.

From the beginning, I made it clear that I would not put any more tax dollars on the line if it meant perpetuating the bad business decisions that had led these companies to seek help in the first place, he said. I refused to let these companies become permanent wards of the state, kept afloat on an endless supply of taxpayer money. In other words, I refused to kick the can down the road.

To prevent GM from becoming a ward of the state, Obama made it the property of the state.

I decided then, said the first person in chief, that if GM and their stakeholders were willing to sacrifice for their companies' survival ... then the United States government would stand behind them.

Here, I, Barack virtually identified himself with the United States government.

He did not say he would ask Congress to enact legislation to provide the executive with the funds needed to purchase 60 percent of GM or with the legal authority to restructure the company and oversee its business plan.

He said: I decided then ... the United States government would stand behind them.

Remember: In December, Congress specifically declined to enact legislation authorizing the president to bail out the auto industry--let alone to purchase an auto company. What law now gives Obama authority to buy General Motors? The White House says, when pressed, it is the Troubled Asset Relief Program. But that legislation was written specifically to allow the Treasury Department to purchase assets from financial institutions. It says nothing about buying auto companies.

And if Congress has not enacted a law authorizing the president to take ownership of an auto company, who will say when he must surrender it?

And where does the Constitution say the government can take ownership of an auto company, let alone at the individual initiative of a president who cannot point to a duly enacted law that clearly expresses the deliberated will of the people that he should have that power.

The first person in chief explained on Monday how he first vetoed and then approved GMs and Chryslers restructuring plans in order to make them undergo the sweeping changes he deemed appropriate.

The original restructuring plans submitted by GM and Chrysler earlier this year did not call for the sweeping changes these companies needed to survive--and I couldn't in good conscience proceed on that basis, said I, Barack.

Since then, Obama explained, the new GM CEO, who replaced the CEO Obama forced out, has worked tirelessly to produce a plan that meets the strict standards that I laid out at the beginning.

He dared not buck I, Barack.

Eventually, Obama said he was putting another $30 billion in tax dollars into GM on top of the nearly $20 billion the company has already received.

Understand, were making these investments not because I want to spend the American peoples tax dollars, but because I want to protect them, said I, Barack. What we are doing--what I have no interest in doing--is running GM.

This passage may be more worthy of the used car salesman in chief than the colossus who just seized an auto company.

I, Barack may claim he does not want to run GM but in almost the same breath he says he will guarantee GM warranties and that the new GM will produce the cars he envisions.

And I want to remind everyone that if you are considering buying a GM car during this period of restructuring, your warranties will be safe and government-backed, said Obama.

So Im confident, said I, Barack, that the steps Im announcing today will mark the end of the old GM and the beginning of the new GM; a new GM that can produce the high-quality, safe and fuel-efficient cars of tomorrow; that can lead America towards an energy independent future; and is once more a symbol of America's success.

I, Baracks GM will never be a symbol of Americas success. Unless Congress begins asserting its constitutional authority in defense of free enterprise, however, it will be concrete evidence of Americas slide into socialism--a system where the state controls the means of production as a means of controlling the people.

I belive he's a Pulizter prize nominee:

Terrence P. Jeffrey became Editor of Human Events, a national conservative weekly in the United States, in 1996. Prior to that, he served as campaign manager to Republican candidate Pat Buchanan in the 1996 presidential race, and as research director in Buchanan's 1992 campaign. In between the two campaigns, Jeffrey was executive director of The American Cause. He was born in San Francisco and graduated from Princeton University in 1981. He worked from 1987-91 as an editorial writer at the Washington Times, which nominated him for the Pulitzer Prize.

Heaven forbid

Might we have running the country a young, inexperianced, man of color (not dissen)

Acting like a power monger?

I belive he's a Pulizter prize nominee:

Boy am I glad I never pursued higher education. I would be required to write like an idiot...

I, Baracks GM will never be a symbol of Americas success.

What type of crap wording is this?

Tom

The new GM cars will be powered by Iranian-Hammas built 3 cylinder motors...:p

With enough room for 2 100lb adults and a child seat on the roof rack.

I don't particularly like the form in which he wrote it....the "I, Barack" perspective. I think he is trying to put a perspective in the article about the focus of our fearless leader...."I, Barack", but it is confusing. It would have been better to have just stated what the "I" was all about. Sometimes folks try to get too stylistic in their writing and it backfires. I get his point but that piece is a hard read.

"I, Barack" will reveal his true self over time and he will also reveal to us what "The worst economy since the Great Depression" is really like and that is CHANGE I always hoped to never see. I've always felt a substantial economic crisis was coming but all the stuff that happened at the end of last year and what the new admin is doing makes me fear for the worse case scenario. The stilmus funds will give us a brief boost but that will be shortlived and then "the chickens WILL come home to roost".

We're in a pickle that started a long time ago and has been allowed to build by all parties and all administrations.

Just hope the 2nd ammendment stands so I can feel a little comfort when the SHTF! Just Grandpa's opinion.....

Sit back. Relax. Have a beer.

Since Obama took office, I'm no longer anxious or stressed. In fact, I was able to stop taking my blood pressure meds. Hell... Under Bush, I was on anti-depressants and Xanax. No more.

No offense, Mark, but you're possibly not getting it.

Yeah, Bush gave me the chills and some of his bone headed moves made me wonder where his head was at. But you have to admit, well maybe you don't, the current administration has done some knee jerk actions, to the chagrin of leading economic experts all over the globe.

In my 60 years as a U.S. citizen, I've never been as concerned about our country as I am now. And I can tell you, that's saying something.

I feel that we, as American citizens, should look at the goings on objectively and without partisan emotion to see where this administration is taking us...and if there's a way back from that place.

Our nation has borrowed and spent more funds in the last 6 months than it has in the past 30 years. That can't be good.

Jerry, I have 5 years on you and have seen the government grow and grow and grow. People were not held responsible for their actions. Its natural to want to help those less fortunate, but many that we help are not unfortunate, they are just playing the system and taking our money. The middle class is getting crushed out of existence. Raising taxes during a depression seems extremely dumb. I don't think this administration has a clue about getting us out of this mess. While trying he is really reaching outside his authority as president and setting a very bad precedence. With Reid, Pelosi and Obama at the helm I'm very concerned.

Mark K has it right.

Obama administration was left a smoldering America. Everything was left for dead BY DESIGN. He is righting the ship. It will take a while Im sure. He is doing fine. You cannot conquer the world when you are messed up at home. GO OBAMA!

Frank, I realize that Obama inherited a bank failed economy. The cause of this was Dodd and Barnie Frank the watchful eyes of the banking industry and the philosophy that "everyone should have a home" ideology og the liberal Congress. When trying to free America from a dependency on foreign energy, its seems insane to prevent offshore drilling, mining shale oil, no nuclear energy and no coal. That leaves solar and wind as his main sources. These will not do the job. When the economy is slumping you don't raise taxes.

Pelosi and Reid were there before and are a major part of the problem.

You believe he is righting the ship...how so? Trillions have been committed with very little to show for it. Frank, I hope you are right, but honestly I sincerely doubt it.

Market was right, moved back to the states, bought the yurt for $89.00 sold for 1.6 mil

If true that says more about your mental stability and ability to cope with reality than it says about who is our commander in chief. No offense.

If not true, then you are guilty of the same partisan hackery that you call silly in other threads.

I think the main point of the piece was to illustrate President Obama's ego, and his gradual amassing of power within the Executive Branch. Take a look at how many "czars" he's attempting to appoint or has already appointed since taking office: drug czar, a U.S. border czar, an urban czar, a regulatory czar, a stimulus accountability czar, an Iran czar, a Middle East czar, non-proliferation czar, auto czar, cyber security czar, terrorism czar, Guantanamo closure czar, and a czar for both Afghanistan and Pakistan.

These "czars" are appointed and serve solely at the pleasure of the President. They don't go through Senate confirmation hearings, and they have no Congressional oversight whatsoever. They are only answerable to the Executive Branch and the President. That's a huge threat to the the Constitutional system of checks and balances. Hell, even Senator Robert (KKK) Byrd (D-WVA) has expressed concern over this expansion of Presidential power in a letter to Obama back in February.

And the mainstream media continues to fawn over him and feed his ego like he's the second coming. Newsweek editor Evan Thomas brought adulation over President Obama to a whole new level on Friday, declaring on MSNBC:

"I mean in a way Obamas standing above the country, above above the world, hes sort of God."

and

"Reagan was about America," and "we're above that now."
