Anyone ever replace the heater core in the truck yet themself. Is this a difficult item to replace, requiring the dash, instruments, etc to be removed first?
 
Steps involved for a rough idea.



Steps for removal and install:



Note:

If a heater core leak is suspected, the heater core must be leak-tested before it is removed from the vehicle. For additional information, refer to «Section 412-00».



All vehicles



1. Deactivate the supplemental restraints system (SRS). For additional information, refer to «Section 501-20B».



2. Remove the floor console unit. For additional information, refer to «Section 501-12».



Vehicles with 4.0L engine

3. Remove the screws and remove the snow shield.



All vehicles

5. Crimp off the coolant hoses and disconnect from the heater core.

6. Note:

RH shown LH similar.

Remove the instrument panel center support brackets.

Remove the four bolts.

Remove the four nuts.



7. Remove the assist handle bolt covers.

8. Remove the bolts and the passenger assist handle.

9. Remove the windshield side garnish moldings.

10. Remove the defroster opening grill.

11. Remove the upper instrument panel support bolts.

12. Remove the exterior cowl grill. For additional information, refer to «Section 501-02».

13. Remove the instrument panel support bolt.

14. Note:

RH shown LH similar.

Remove the two instrument panel side finish panels.

15. Lower the glove compartment.

16. Loosen the LH instrument panel side support bolts until half the threads are exposed.

17. CAUTION:

Be sure the instrument panel is properly supported to avoid possible damage to the instrument panel wiring or components.



CAUTION:

To avoid damage to the instrument panel wiring or components, do not use excessive force when moving the instrument panel away from the dash panel.



Note:

The instrument panel may be supported by installing threaded rods or equivalent, with the same diameter and thread pitch, in place of the instrument panel support bolts.



Properly support the instrument panel and remove the RH instrument panel support bolts to allow the instrument panel to be pulled away from the dash panel.



18. Remove the center console floor duct.

19. Remove the screws and remove the RH floor duct.

20. Remove the screws and remove the LH floor duct.

21. Disconnect the electrical connectors and detach the pin-type retainers.

22. Remove the screws and remove the heater core tube cover.

23. Remove the RH heater core cover screws.

24. Remove the LH heater core cover screws and remove the heater core cover.

25. CAUTION:

Be sure the instrument panel is properly supported to avoid possible damage to the instrument panel wiring or components.



CAUTION:

To avoid damage to the instrument panel wiring or components, do not use excessive force when moving the instrument panel away from the dash panel.



Note:

The instrument panel will need to be moved to facilitate removal of the heater core.



Remove the heater core.



26. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the coolant hoses with coolant hose lubricant or plain water only if needed. Top-off the engine coolant level. For additional information, refer to «Section 303-03».



27. Reactivate the supplemental restraints system (SRS). For additional information, refer to «Section 501-20B».



 
Whatever you do, don't buy a heater core from Ford. They're crap. Went through 3 of them in a one year period with my wife's former Expedition. The aftermarket one that was finally put in has held up well.
