I was wondering if anyone has drove to Canada, what do you need? Do you need a passport to drive up and through? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. btw, im driving to Nova Scotia. Thanks

I drove up there a few years ago for a day trip when I was visiting a friend in Maine. They just stopped us at the border, look at our liscenses and then asked our business. We told them we were driving to the nearest town for lunch and they let us through with no problem.

I drove through to Tremblant last year and they only looked at my drivers license. I would bring your birth cirtificate if you have it with you. They might ask to see it. I dont think you need a passport though.

Well, can I ever help you here. At this point you do NOT need a passport and you are absolutley welcome here. You should bring your birth certificate and any one piece of photo I.D. BUT, do not, do not bring firearms of any kind to Canada unless you are going hunting and then make sure you have the contract from your Guide and resort with you. Never attempt to bring street drugs or paraphenalia either. You will get asked your home, your destination and the purpose of your visit. have a fabulous and Bienvenue!

Have a great visit to MY home.

Not sure how it is with all these new security since 9/11, here is a link that might be helpful for you.

I have crossed the border from Canada to US and back many times post 9/11 with only a birth certificate and photo ID...the length of your stay usually predicts the questions asked.

Where are you planning on crossing?

After Dec 2006 you will be required to have a Passport to enter Canada. I use mine every time I go to Canada as it seems I get through the border quicker. Just a couple of questions and I'm on my way.

Thanks,

SST

Went there for the first time in Oct 2004. All we had was our drivers license. They asked us to park the car and come inside to talk to the customs officer. They then asked to search the car, which we said OK and they did. They thanked us and told us to enjoy our stay, in Canada. Beautiful country. :)

I was driving my 94 SHO so I guess they thought we might be bringing in contraband.

It took about 30 minutes to get across the border. We where just sight seeing looking at the fall colors. We went in next to lake superior in Minnesota came out through Michigan took 2 minutes or less to get back in the USA.

Photo I.D. and proof of citizenship are all that is currently required. A drivers license and birth certificate are sufficient (although I've never been asked for proof of citizenship).

I went through Canada last week on my way from NY to Detroit, hauling my camper.... all they looked at was the driver's license, and asked the questions as above... that's all... doesn't make me feel too secure... i could been smuggling anything in the camper... i did bring my birth cetrts, tho...

i go to the casino in niagara falls all the time.....they ask where you are going, for how long and check my license. Sometimes they ask whee I was born. Nothing major.....sometimes the lines at the booths can be long but if u hit them at the right time they are ok.

I had a much easier time getting into British Columbia a couple of years ago then I had getting back into the US. Went back and forth several times because of the way our trip worked out. The only time I had anyone search my vehicle was the US agents. Thank god I hid those Cuban cigars good.

Glad to know about the passports in 2006, because we are definitely going back some day. BC was absolutely beautiful. (As was Washington state)

Yeah, gotta watch for the cigar-sniffing dogs.

Bring lots of money for gas, also radar detectors are illegal...but that's not a big deal since everybody drives like a bat out of hell on the QEW anyway.

Turn your headlights on all the time so that you blend in, also it helps to end every sentence with "eh".

Bring back some 3.5 gallon toilets, you could sell them here and make enough to pay for your trip.

My understanding ie the 06 passport thing is its U.S. legislation and that we are not at this time planning the same measures, so you wont need one to get into Canada in 06, but you(us also)will need one to get back into the States.

But as Tom said if you have one bring it it always helps, if not a photo ID and birth cert. will do.

You,ll love Nova Scotia its a beautiful province, so come on up and enjoy, Alexander Kieths is the beer to drink in Nova scotia.:D

Gavin, that is too funny. But, I won't try it. I thought it was funny when the Custom Guy said who is the lady next to me? I said that would be my wife and your holding her Passport. He gave me the evil eye...lol
