I 2nd the vote for a nice watch. iPods and Laptops are fun & useful, but chances are 5 years from now they will either be broken or obsolete. The watch is something that can be treasured the rest of his life.

A Gift of Words to my Son

by C R Slater

My young man, you are our beloved Son

And one day, you will be a man

So some words to heed, from your loving Dad

As I advise you, in the one way I can.

My Son, do not grow up, to take after your Dad

But grow up, an individual as you are.

Your Dads not the best Son

So do not follow him.

and that way, you may go, really far.

Son it's wisdom, Dads offering,

Wisdom through Love,

the only one thing, I can offer.

In years yet to come, you will love, laugh and cry,

Your own Wisdom, you may even doubt.

But there is one thing Dad did,

which was truly right,

and I do hope you may do the same.

It was to pick a fine woman,

like your Mother, My Wife,

so with happiness, your life may gain.

She blessed me with you Son,

what more could Dad ask,

but that your Wife, may bless you with more.

So Son, think on your Mother,

when you search for a Wife,

and you'll know, what you're hearts searching for.

I cannot give much more, than this, and my Love,

than this advice, my love, and my prayers.

Dad can't give much more, than the Mother he gives,

and to tell You, we both always, love you, and care.

One place I found this poem online is:

Laptop -- It is necessary for homework, and also has the added benefit of being an entertainment center (DVD, online music, MP3s, etcs) My laptop was indispensible when I lived in the military dorms in Korea. The quarters are cramped in dorms, and a small, multi-functional item like a laptop increases quality of life more than you can imagine.

I agree with the watch. For my graduation, my parents got me an engraved Montblanc clock and matching pen. It just sits on my shelf, but it's something I'll never get rid of, lose, or forget about. Engraving reads "May your dreams take you to the stars and beyond - Love Mom and Dad". Since I've always wanted to be an astronaut since I was a kid, it really meant a lot to me.
