They are less dangerous then HID conversion mounted in a non HID headlight enclosure.

I've been running HIDs for well over a year now, I think it's SAFER...to me anyway. It REALLY lights up the road. The difference is truly night and day. In fact, I can run just with the "driving" lights (the little ones at the bottom) and I am able to see significantly better than I ever could with the OEM bulbs. I think HIDs should be standard on ALL new cars, the road would be a much safer place.

baron,

You missed my point. HID's are safer if the vehicle is designed for them. They are illegal to be installed in a vehicle that is designed for 9000 series bulbs. They cause too much glare to oncoming traffic. HID's should be standard on all new vehicles, but not retrofitted on cars that are not designed for them.

I got this from www.dsmtuners.com and it's a lot of GOOD info for the ppl wanting HID "kits" for thier Halogen fitted cars.

==========================================================

I really hope this thread can help you guys. I found it on another site and thought it could save myself and few others the headache of constantly explaining this.
Your're making the road more dangerous than it already is by adding a HID kit to your car. so please do HID the right way by doing a retrofit.
HID kits are illegal due to the glare that they cause. Glare is Light that is emitted in a Uncontrollable path. When light is traveling in a uncontrollable path it can hit other vehicle operators affecting there vision because of the High amount of uncontrollable light that is being Emitted from a HID kit in a standard Halogen housing. If you have ever turned a flashlight on right in front of your face while it is dark out, that is the same feeling that the other drivers on the road experience from a standard HID kit.
OEM Vehicles such as Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Lexus are all equipped with HID or Xenon Headlights. Some use reflector housing’s without projectors. Others use HID projectors.
The Lexus IS300 is a Prime Example of a HID reflector housing. It does not use a Projector. It uses a Specially designed Reflector housing that is meant to use HID. This does not create the Super sharp cutoff. But it does control where the light is being Emitted.
Other vehicles such as the Honda S2000 Use HID projectors, These Projectors are meant to use HID. They are Specially Designed and have been tested Hundreds of times to get the right projection of light while maintaining a Good Cutoff.

I'll have to get a pic of my HID light pattern. It is very defined. Not quite as defined as the pics above, but MUCH more than the BAD pics that you have above. Like I said though, most of the time I drive around with just the driving lights, I rarely even turn the headlights on because I don't need 'em unless I'm in an area prone to deer/people or on a 3+ lane highway. The law here in MO states that every vehicle must have 2 forward-facing lights (but no more than 4) that are primarily white in color...so it's perfectly legal to run the driving lights only. Sometimes being a former cop pays off. ;)

I do see what you're saying though, when I do have my headlights on, I do get brightlighted occasionally by people in smaller cars.

I have an HID kit, and I aimed my headlights down a bit, but yes, there is still a bit of glare. I'm planning on getting a set of Hella 90mm projectors or something similar to retrofit into a second set of headlight units. Here's how mine look compared to a Sylvania Silverstar, and a picture of them in the dark.

So an HID conversion, but with H4 bulbs. If they are anything like the halogen bulbs, they have built in filters and have a very defined beam pattern:

My SVT Focus came with HID's from the factory. They are like the S2000 with the proper cutoff. I've seen some cars pulled over because of "illegal light HID's"[Broken External Image]:
