Fourwheel drive problems

My son explorer has a weird problem when he puts it in fourwheel drive the 4 x 4 light comes on and the fourwheel drive works but if he turns the head lights on the 4 x 4 light goes off and the four wheel drive doesn't work any ideas thanks

Odd indeed! Weak batteries do some really bizarre things to these trucks so the first question is if the battery is in top condition? Second question, this IS a 2001 Sport Trac, correct? What is the build date on the door sticker. There are two 2001 builds, a Job 1 and a Job 2.

I am guessing it is a battery issue and or a poor connection.

thanks the battery isn't that old but there is corrosion on the terminals I looked at it today so I;ll have to clean them when he gets home from college and steve it is a reg. explorer thanks again for the help
