Ford 5.4 Triton motor. Issues?

Looking for information on the 5.4 Triton.

(Looking for a used Expedition)



For my understanding...

< to 99 ??

00 - 03 Problems with spark plugs stripping and blowing out.

04 - 06 Problems with Cam Phasers.

07 - > ??



Any addl info anyone can offer?

What to look for, What not to look for?

The older 5.4 did have a problem with launching spark plugs but I wouldn't let it deter me from buying one cause if it happens it's an easy fix...at least I think so. The newer 3 valve 5.4s did/do have cam phaser issues but every one I have ever fixed for that issue has been linked to the wrong oil being used...use Motorcraft 5-20 syn blend and a factory filter and you won't have any problems. Also the new 3 valve motors had an issue with getting the spark plugs out...this is also an easy fix IMO.



Tyically the engines are good engines and don't have alot of problems, most common one I can think of is the oil cooler gasket leaking adn depending on if it's a 4x2 or a 4x4 dictates the cost to repair...the 4x4 is a PITA.



If you want 4x4 don't get an AWD get one that you can select 4x2 mode only.
