I picked up a set of Focal 165KF's this wekend...i'm sound-deadening the doors still, but will install sometime this week.

For those members that have components, any advise/pics on where to best mount the tweeters?

From what I've read , I think it's supposed to be better to mount them closer to the midbass driver or full range speaker.

I'll dig up the research I did on it tomorrow.

Excellent comp set btw.

thanks psycareyo, i read up quite a bit on it too. i think they recommend 12-18 inches apart...i know, i'm happy. i went in to buy the focal 165A1 (base set) and they gave me a deal that was waay to good to walk away from.

that acually looks really good SuperTrac. how's it sound? i quickly read through the booklet that came with my speakers, and the preference they had for install was 1. dash, 2. A-pillars, and 3. high on doors.

i don't know how it can change that much from those 3 locations. i like your install...thanks for the idea.

Pull the black piece at the front of the dash by the windshield. Mount them in it. The tweeters reflect off of the glass, and it sounds great. I did it on my '99 Explorer and actually won some SQL awards.

Supertrac - I'm not too worried about the quality of the actual speaker. if the reviews are right, it's a pretty quality speaker/tweeter. i was just looking at some idea's as to where i could mount it in the Trac, and see what other members have done with thier component set-ups.

Dingo - that's an interesting idea. do you mount them pointing towards the windshield?

Yup. Straight up. I just dug through all the pics of the old truck, and these are the only two where you can see them. Please disregard the subject matter of the pics.

thanks - when i've gotten a tip from you in the past and asked if you could eloborate or had pics, you usually curse out your work computer and i just can't visualize it...:lol:

this tip is now worth 2000 words....and the subject matter is what makes these awesome!

so about a foot in from each corner, facing straight up....thanks.

did you fish the speaker wire through the rubber gromet in the door?

any tips on a good location for the crossovers?

Well, those were just tweeters, not part of a component set. Their wires ran from their own amp in the back of the truck up under the dash.

For yours, you could mount the crossovers under the dash, and then from them straight to the tweeters and use the factory door wires for the woofer.

Can someone please tell me are6.5 round sp[eakers able to fit into our tracs? All the way around front and back? How about 6x9's.... I always thought we could only do 5X7 or 6x8's

They can be made to fit, but are not a direct fit. You might be able to just make a plate to give them enough room, but I'm not sure, you may have to actually cut the doors.

you may have to actually cut the doors

i sure hope not! well i'll find out soon enough i guess. i think you have to make an mdf trim ring, mount that to the opening, and then mount the speakers on the trim ring...

But then with the trim ring are you going to have enough room for the door panel to go back on? I think it depends greatly on the basket design of the speaker, some are shallow and will work fine with just a trim ring, others won't and door cutting will be required. No sure fire answer.
