Two CHP Officers were conducting speed enforcement on I-15, just north of the Marine Corps Air Station at El Toro, California. One of the officers was using a hand held radar device to check speeding vehicles approaching the crest of a hill. The officers were suddenly surprised when the radar gun began reading 300 miles per hour. The officer attempted to reset the radar gun, but it w ould not reset and then turned off.

Just then a deafening roar over the treetops revealed that the radar had in fact locked on to a USMC F/A-18 Hornet which was engaged in a low flying exercise near the location.

Back at CHP Headquarters the Patrol Captain fired off a complaint to the USMC Base Commander. The reply came back in true USMC style:

Thank you for your letter. We can now complete the file on this incident.

You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Hornet had detected the presence of, and subsequently locked on to your hostile radar equipment and automatically sent a jamming signal back to it, which is why it shut down.

Furthermore, an Air-to-Ground missile aboard the fully armed aircraft had also automatically locked on to your equipment location.

Fortunately, the Marine Pilot flying the Hornet recognized the situation for what it was, quickly responded to the missile system alert status and was able to override the automated defense system before the missile was launched to destroy the hostile radar position.

The pilot also suggests you cover your mouths when cussing at them, since the video systems on these jets are very high tech.

Sergeant Johnson, the officer holding the radar gun, should get his dentist to check his left rear molar. It appears the filling is loose. Also, the snap is broken on his holster.

Thank you for your concern,

Funny! Actually, this one appeared on a Discovery Channel or TLC show called "Urban Legends, Fact or Fiction" a few years ago. They ended up discrediting it, after proving that the traffic Radar signal was not even close to being strong enough to reach the jet overhead. It would almost be totally believable otherwise.

Not only that, but CHiPs as a general rule don't use RADAR. They pace you in squad cars w/calibrated speedometers. At least that's how they rolled when I was in the Navy and stationed in San Diego for four years. I got a ticket in my '86 Mustang GT northbound on 395 on the way to Ridgecraft. The cop pulled me over when I was doing ~135. He was nice and wrote 85mph on the ticket!

Of course, that was back in my young, stupid, "invincible" days. ;)

I think they still do it that way. Plus, if they're running stationary Radar, they are most likely using a Laser device that sends a focused signal only where its aimed. They usually aim at your license plate because its a nice reflective surface. I've seen some companies selling an anti-reflective license plate cover to defeat Laser. It still wouldn't work for the old fashioned moving Radar, though.

The new program is lidar, detectors are useless in most states that use them

thats why I just sold my solo, kali is almost all lidar now.You cannot escape or detect Lidar

some states you can jam Lidar, not in mine.

Nope, they love to ride around here with Ka Band Radar going. My detector picks them up constanty. Not saying they do not pace as well.

Around here, they have a cop stand on an overpass and scan cars as they come up close to the bridge. Usually there are several units on the side waiting to go after whoever the cop on the overpass catches speeding on the freeway. Mainly see this in the town of Plano, TX. on US75. About 90% of the time, the cops waiting are in unmarked cars, so the driver doesn't suspect it to be a cop.

I really don't know, I've just seen them standing up there with a gun of some sort. But, they have been really affective in nailing speeders on the freeway. When he gets one, he just calls on his radio to give the waiting cop which car to pull over and write the ticket. They usually have one standing on each side to nail north and south travelers.

CHP uses Ka band radar, Lidar, pacing from vehicles and aircraft. My Passport picked up the Ka band JUST as I came around a corner on I-80 last fall on the way down the hill, a day after being paced on Hwy 50 in the Sport Trac the day before, going up. (Sport Trac has no detector.) Both tickets were for 70 in a 55. I have seen them on the side of Hwy 50 in Sac with the Lidar, and my Passport doesn't make a sound...

Be it true, false, or just another "urban legend," I enjoyed the story and got a good laugh out of it. And, on my job, I need all the laughs I can get!

Fox, Garland used to do that all the time on LBJ, too. They'd line up on the side of the road with one car and about 10 motorcycles. The cop in the car would clock, raise his hand, then point at the vehicle as it drove by. The first bike in line would then give chase. Haven't seen it happen in a long time, though.

In Plano, it seems they only do this towards the end of the month.....guess they want to get their quota for the month.

I haven't used a radar detector for many years, besides my auto ins does not allow it. In the contract, it states if I was to get in an accident and a radar detector is in the car/truck, they don't have to pay the damages and ins would be canceled on the spot. So, not worth the risk for me, nor do I speed like I use to.

In some states it is illegal for a cop to clock you and have another cop chase and give you the ticket. When the cop writes the ticket his is testifying that he witnessed the speeding, which he cannot do it someone else was clocking you with radar.

Laser can be beaten and the detectors do work. The real problems is that they only aim the gun if they are pretty well convinced that you are speeding. To detect the laser requires the cop to aim at someone far enough ahead of you for you to pick up some of the scattered light. If nobody looked like they were speed accept you, you will probably get nailed. Most radar units are always on even when they are not tracking a car. Instant-On radar is harder to detect but once in use it give the same signature as regular radar. There is even a low=powered radar that does not blast a huge radar signal down the road and must be used within a few hundted yards

Cincinnatti Microwave who makes the Escort proved that laser beams do scatter when the hit dust and polution in the air and can be detected as far as 5 miles away and can be coming from any direction. Yes, cops aim for the license plate or the headlights to get a good reflective surface, but the myth that lase light does not scatter is not completely true. The more polluted the air is, the more the laser light is scattered and themore detectable it is.

Clocking with an accurate speedometer was how it used to be done many-many years ago. Cop cars used to be equiped with specially calibrated speedometer that were about 6 inches in diameter and sat on top of the steering column in front of the regular car speedometer. When cops clock you by speedometer, they have to clock you within a certain distance for a certain length of time or distance to insure that they did not just run up on you real fast and say that you were speeding, when it was only them who were speeding. It takes more time, but speedometer clocked tickets are probably a lot harder to beat than radar, laser, or lidar.

I used to get out of speeding tickets by having a whip ant. on the back of my car. Whenever I went to court before the judge, I'd let him know that I had one and he would dismiss the charge. :)

You cannot beat a lidar ticket, you cannot detect lidar, you get hit with lidar you are dawgmeat, If you live in a state that allows jammers, you stand a chance against lidar.

If you have a jammer and jam a lidar in a state where they are illegle, you might just get your car impounded.

Around here, alot of ppl are now spraying their plates so they can beat the intersection cams and the ones on the toll roads.
