Carlos Santana wishes Obama would legalize pot

Published: 4/3/09, 7:05 AM EDT

By MARCELA ISAZA

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) -

President Barack Obama brushed off a question about legalizing marijuana in his online town hall last month, but guitar god Carlos Santana says he wishes he would seriously consider it.

"Legalize marijuana and take all that money and invest it in teachers and in education," Santana said in an interview this week. "You will see a transformation in America."

During his online town hall on March 26, Obama fielded a question about whether legalization of the illicit drug would help pull the nation out of recession. Obama said he didn't think it was good economic policy, and also joked: "I don't know what this says about the online audience."

But Santana said making pot legal is "really way overdue, like the prohibition with the alcohol and stuff like that.

"I really believe that as soon as we legalize and decriminalize marijuana we can actually afford a really good governor who won't keep taking money away from education and from teachers and send him back to Hollywood where he can do 'D' movies and we can get an 'A' governor," referring to former movie action hero and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Santana made the comments as he was promoting his upcoming rock residency in Las Vegas at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The show debuts May 27 and runs through 2010.

"It's a milestone for me because I always said I would never do certain things," Santana said, adding that the list included staying in one place for too long.

"Yet what is very different is this is the year I decided to do all the things that I said I would never do. It's a way of coming into a room that I thought was dark and I would be afraid and I actually bring my light to it."

Santana, whose hits vary from "Evil Ways" to "Maria Maria," said he is also working on two upcoming albums.

While the 61-year-old has previously talked about a possible retirement, he's decided to be more careful about predicting the future.

"Every time I tell God my plans he cracks up, he starts laughing. So I just decided to be quiet for a while and not say that I am going to retire and go to Maui and become a minister," he said. "God was cracking up. He thought it was a good joke. So I said, 'OK.' Every time I want to make him laugh I tell him my plans. So we'll see."

If this happens, I'm buying stock in the "Munchie" industry!!

Oh yeah, let's just keep spending $44 Billion a year to criminalize something that's no more harmful than the perfectly legal booze and cigarettes we're free to use now instead of regulating it to make it even safer for consumers and bringing in $33 Billion in estimated tax income. It's not like we need the $77 Billion swing in revenue or anything.

As an added benefit, we can continue pushing otherwise law-abiding people into the prison system (which isn't at all overcrowded), clogging up the courts with pointless cases, forcing people to make friends with drug dealers in order to get their weed (the real cause of the oft-cited "stepping stone" effect) and shipping billions to druglords in Mexico.

Everybody wins! (And by "everybody" I mean "nobody.")

JMHO, NO! As a former user and abuser. I think it would cause more addiction problems as we do have with alcohol. Yes there are differences in the pot high than alcohol. There will be those that will be walking thru life out of character still. Also it would create a nation of more lazy people.

Been clean for over 20yrs. Been there done that. I used and abused from age 19 to 37. I know what Im talking about. Im 59 now. Looking back at so much time wasted due to my abuse.

Odd that santana would say that. I just recently saw an article that he is consisdering becoming a ordained minister.

Drugs do not immediately equal bad. All through history shaman/spiritual leaders have often gone into "deep meditation" with natural drugs. We are talking about a plant that whatever creator you believe in put on this earth, not some man made crazy street drug.

Weed seems more popular than ever. That said, most of the new attendees over the past couple of years at my Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are pot users. And they're young. Quite young. Their lives are just as screwed up as well-worn alcoholics who are new to AA. Don't tell me that it's safer than booze.

The problem isn't the drugs/alcohol it's the ABUSE of it.. everything in moderation, if you can't use it in moderation it's not the drugs/alcohol's fault.

they call it a gateway drug for a reason...if they legalized it watch what would happen to all other kids of drug use...

"They" = the same people who outlaw it.. propaganda..

I don't even smoke pot anymore, haven't since college. I smoked a lot in college, still got good grades, and never did any other drugs (besides alcohol of couse )

It's not the drugs fault, it's the persons.. keep trying to blame pot for peoples poor decisions though.....

Exactly! Why give those that will abuse, another legal choice of a mind altering subtance.?

You must have been a recreational user. Same some people can have a drink or 2. Then not another, until some event.

It's the abuse that should be illegal, not the pot itself. Why throw people in jail over possession of a plant? Why outlaw the growing of a plant?

Why throw people in jail over DUI or PI ???

This thread is going to go nowhere. You have to been there, to understand the truth Im talking about. Recreational use in college dont count.

DUI endangers others, I'm not familiar with what PI is though.

If someone gets pulled over for driving while high, same thing applies as DUI throw them in jail. If I'm sitting on my front porch smoking a joint, and a cop rolls by I get ticketed at the least and at the most get jail time.. again for nothing more than using a plant, I'm not endangering anyone right?

PI. Public intoxication. Yes that can happen to you on your own front porch, in most states. Cops discrestion. No test and it will hold up in court. Depending on where you live as to amount punishment.

Booze is made from all natural stuff also. But I would be willing to bet it causes many problems in alot of peoples lives. Not just DUI. You never know what goes on behind a closed door of some one that drinks everyday. Even if they dont drive drunk.

JD Im through with this. Convince someone else...:)

DWI/ DUI /under the influence of drugs.

NO EXCUSE when you are behind the wheel.

Bottom line.. Government has NO BUSINESS telling me what I can put in MY body. Let alone outlawing something that grows in the earth.

I'm sorry you couldn't control your urges, that doesn't mean everyone else should be legislated against.. That's fine that you are done though, just admit I'm right

MJ,Pure opiates such as USP heroin, hash, Psylicybin rooms, peyoty buttons (SP)

are all psycotropic for sure, but they do not cause bodily harm, even over long term use.

MJ over heavy long term use can cause pulmonary problems, but not lung cancer as legal cigs do.

MJ can cause two consenting adults to have wild and crazy sex:banana:

Alcohol (another legal substance)causes cirrosis of the liver (death sentance), Cardiomyopathy, all types of cancers, brain damage, all if used in excess.

Cocaine is bad news, we had a patient last year (now dead) lost both feet, had triple bypass surg she was 22.

In kali, with the weed we have today, two hits before dinner, you don't want a glass of wine or the before dinner Cocktail, that s good thing.

Downside is, yeppers, am good for 10 pieces of garlic bread with my extra large mambo wambo all meat marvel pizza:p

Oh one thing I forgot about alcohol, it causes people to use guns to kill other people.

You are not capible of doing such with MJ, you might want to give othr people a huggers.
