thinking about rewiring the circuit to allow me to roll up and down my rear glass without having limits. if i wanna roll it down 1/2 way i can. i already looked at it and made sure it was possible. ill still be able to use the factory switch. you let me know if its worth posting a project.

Definetly would be a good project. I know many of the 01-05 owners have wanted this option, but haven't really heard much of anyone looking into it. I know you have a 2007, but it still would be valuable.

I always assumed the glass didn't stay in the halfway down position because of a breakage risk, but I guess that doesnt make much sense. Maybe Ford thought we'd try to haul long pieces of lumber and secure them by rolling them up in the window. I like the no pinch limit, but I guess the three position window switch is something I could live without.

The original reason, as I read here long ago, was because Ford wanted to avoid liability.

If the rear window was 1/4 up and an accident occurred where a passenger was seated in the middle on the back, risk of decapitation was present.... I hope I explained clearly... :D

At first I thought of replacing the motor and control with those from a Civic Del Sol, which can stop at any height, but never actually tried.

That's exactly why the window isn't set so that it can stop at any height. However, now that there is a headrest in the middle seat, you would think that the liability issue would be minimal. I don't have a middle headrest on my 2001. I'm not sure when they started putting them in.

You will need to completely replace the window motor and mechanism with a more conventional power window motor from a door.

Ford designed a special computer controlled stepper motor for use in the Sport Trac's and it contains a printed circuit board designed into the motor for control. My understanding is that the program cannot be modified so you would have to make your own programable circuit to control the motor.

Also, I don't think the existing switch would work since it only works to trigger the up/down and vent funtions of the stepper motor.

I think your best option would be to replace the existing stepper motor with a conventional power window motor.

Good Luck,

after throughly inspecting it and running straight 12volts to it i can see that if i use the factory switch to trigger two SPDT relays that rest at gound and when triggered send 12volts down the line directly to the motor it can be done. the circuit that ford has devised is alot like the DEI 530T which is a power window module which works off of resistance which is why if you roll the wondow to a certian height and turn the vehicle off you can stop it at any height. not a big deal. i will be bypassing all factory wiring and running my own. i have done many modifications like this in the past. ive already done it on a 2003 trac 2 years ago while installing at a local shop....... wanted to use the window module to roll back window down with alarm. when hooked up regularly it would not work and once bypassed it worked like a champ. anythings possibly if you have the knowledge. i could see if the motors had a limit switch but it does not. it works off resistance alot like the DEI 530T does except it rolls down when it is triggered.

MP Tony T, and to think you were military! With that much electrical jargon, you sound like an electrical engineer. Great "project-to-be" sounds like to me, I hope you "git er' done" soon so we can ogle your finished project. I am sure you will get a few wrenches from it !;)

yes i am in the military.... 31B Military Police and 31E Corrections Specialist. but thats all weekend warrior type stuff. in the real world i am an electrical engineer on the 12volt side of the house. ever heard of peripheral electronics........ thats who i work for.

MPTonyT,

I have been thinking of this for quite a while. My thoughts are to modify only the down function, so that, using the factory switch, the position of the window can be selected by continuously holding the switch in the down position (not momentary as is stock). I wanted to leave the vent and up as a one twist operation in case there is a reason to close the window quickly without holding the switch (rain, intruder or whatever). I can't think of a reason to open the window quickly.

It seems that what you are proposing (utilizing the factory switch) could be done for only the down function.

I'm interested in the project!

MPTonyT, I just installed my Pioneer AVIC-Z1 last night, how do I remove the thump that occurs from the factory subwoofer amp whne I turn the ignition on? I don't mean to highjack this thread so feel free to email me if you would like. That would be another good poject, unless someone already has the solution posted somewhere.

well even if there is an intruder comming in the back window the window will go up and it will hit the person and go right back down. my application will work to go up and possibly trap him in...... wouldnt that be neat....... i also though of using a PTR7 (peripheral) or TR7 (P.A.C.) and make it to when i tap the button twice it will trigger a VT3 (variable timer) and roll the window all the way up. with my experience and electrical engineering backround i can do anything.

Knowledge Is The Key.
