The higher the gear ratio, the quicker your car reaches its peak performance. My mustang has 4:10 gears... it is a treat. 550 rwhp 500 ft lbs of torque: fast. I think my trac has 4:10 gears as well.
For example. Gears that are lower, lets say 2:41, will create peak torque and horse power at free way speeds and higher. 3:73 gears cause the drivetrain to reach optimum performance earlier and is more likely to throw your head into the seat (given you have the horse power).
Our Sport Tracs can come with multiple rear end gears:
Axle Codes (that I believe can be found on the door sticker)
L - Limited Slip Differential
C - Conventional Differential
Code ... Ratio
41 ...... 3.27C
42 ...... 4.10C
43 ...... 3.08C
45 ...... 3.55C
46 ...... 3.73C
D1 ...... 3.27L
D2 ...... 4.10L
D4 ...... 3.73L
D5 ...... 3.55L
This website is not related to Sport Tracs, but has an easy explanation of the effects of different gears. http://www.wallaceracing.com/reargear.htm
There are many ways to look at read end gearing. Everyone, feel free to chime in on this effect.
