'08 V6, 132k. Lately it is cranking longer to start the engine. 12k miles on fuel filter, plugs are about a year and a half old with maybe 15k on them. Plug wires are original but look okay. No CEL, all else seems normal. Could the original starter be crapping out or could it be something else?

Thanks.

If its "cranking" its not the starter. i would pull any plug look to see if its fouled, if it is pull and clean them all. Its a good bet your injectors are need to be cleaned too. Make sure your running the correct octane When you do get it running, does it idle smooth ?

Change those dam wires....... sheesh.....

Check fuel pressure. You should find a Schrader valve on the fuel rail. Also scan for OBD codes - there may be something there that hasn't hit threshold for tripping CEL.

I've been running 89 octane in the summers since that's when we get the crappy oxygenated gas here. Use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner every 5000 miles and the really good BG stuff once a year at state inspection time, which come to think of it is coming up soon. Wondered if maybe starters slow down when they get old. I've had to replace one starter ever in my life, not something I've experienced trouble with.

Got new plug wires on yesterday. It feels noticeably smoother and starts maybe a little quicker. Much like the spark plugs, the passenger side is an incredible pain in the ass. Ended up removing the alternator and heater hose pipe. It's not hard but I fooled around for quite a while before I did that.

Please change those and go from there. The important bits are on the inside and not visible. They can wear a spot and arc to anything they touch as well and still "look" fairly normal. This can affect performance and cause the issue you're chasing.
