I already knew that--but I've always wondered: It was "the 11th hour" of the day...where? On the US East Coast? In France, where the armistice was signed? Or someplace else? If it's French time, then instead of shooting off the 21 gun salute at 11 a.m. local time here in the US, shouldn't it be done at 11 a.m. French time--which is 5 a.m. on the east coast, and 2 a.m. on the west coast? Doing it at 11 a.m. local time is a bit like having people on the west coast have a ceremony remembering 9/11 at 8:46 a.m. local time, even though the first plane hit at 5:46 a.m. west coast time. Doesn't make any more sense than simply picking some time during the day at random.
