A guy on the Explorer Forum swaped out his auto tranny to a manual M501-R1 which did not last too long. He found a brand new tranny for a '03 Ranger, and cross referenced the part no. with Ford and found it is a M50D-R1HD. It is an interesting read.

I thought all 4.0 SOHC had the HD, maybe only in the Ranger

If the HD is like the T-5 HD for trucks. 1st and 2cnd gear are not helical cut. Maybe 3rd, I dont remember. Straight cut. If the syncro gets bad. It makes shifting dificult.

As I stated in the "What is your ST doing for Fathers Day?" post; my ST is stuck in the driveway unable to shift while the engine is running. Thinking it is possibly hydraulics / throwout bearing issue. Haven't had a chance to have it fully looked at yet. Will update as info. becomes available.

Mine did that, it was the master and slave cylinder preventing things from releasing/engaging. I had those, the clutch, and everything else replaced. Turns out they suck in our truck, that and the previous owner had an accessory wire wrapped around the hydraulic line, starving off the fluid.
