i know i have seen a couple of members do the v8 awd swap. but has anyone done the 4.0 awd swap. this would be easier, maybe? what do you think?

If I remember correctly, the AWD drivetrain that's compatible with the Sport Trac (from '98-01 Explorer/Mountaineer) only came with the V8 option.

i talked to a owner yesurday. that had a 4.0 awd in an explorer. 98-01 body style.

is this correct?

As far as I know, the 4x4 Explorers has a Automatic 4x4 system and NOT an AWD system.

To the best of my recollection, and also according to the info that I can find, the V8 option also came with AWD XLT, Eddie Bauer, and Limited trim packages. AWD was only optional with the V8, not the V6.



Member Don D's V8/AWD swap in his Trac came from an Explorer donor vehicle, which I believe was 2001.



If the vehicle came with a V6, it 4WD was optional.



I've only looked at model year 2001, so I'm not sure how far back the V8/AWD option was introduced.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a later explorer with the 4.0 SOHC and AWD. The 4.0 OHV only had 4x4
